The Soviet Union hid its military secrets just as closely as the United States did during the Cold War. Particular attention was paid to the conspiracy of military equipment and the latest weapons developments. In such an atmosphere, military parades were almost the only opportunity for American spies to see and photograph the latest developments of the Soviet military-industrial complex. Not so long ago, the CIA declassified some of the photographs taken by its employees in the USSR.
1. ACS "Condenser"
The self-propelled artillery installation of the Soviet design "Condenser" received a 406-mm cannon. For comparison, guns of the same caliber are used as "main" guns on American Iowa-class battleships.
The self-propelled guns had a huge impact. When firing simulated nuclear weapons, the vehicle not only rolled back a few meters. With a high degree of probability, part of her components and assemblies broke down. A total of 4 such self-propelled guns were made. They were never accepted into service.
2. TRK "Filin"
The photograph of a CIA agent shows the "Owl" tactical missile system with the index 2K4. The modified base ACS ISU-152K was used as a chassis for the installation. The "Filina" ballistic missile was at one time elusive and was equipped with a special warhead. There were missiles with nuclear and non-nuclear warheads. Preparation for launch took only 30 minutes.
3. SAM "Desna"
Anti-aircraft missile system "Desna" with the S-75 index was adopted in the USSR in 1957. At the time of adoption, the characteristics of the air defense system allowed it to fight any aerodynamic targets. The range of destruction of targets was from 0.5 to 30 km.
4. TRK "Korshun"
And here is another Soviet tactical missile system. The car was called "Korshun". Such installations were armed with 3P7 missiles and could hit targets at a distance of up to 55 km. With a car mass of 18.14 tons, it could accelerate to 55 km / h on the highway. The cruising range was 530 km.
5. SAM S-25
The S-25 system became the first model of anti-aircraft guided weapons adopted in the USSR. The range of the "working" height of the air defense missile system was 5-15 km. It was this complex that was used to create the first two rings of Moscow's anti-aircraft defense. They contained 56 complexes, each of which could simultaneously hit up to 20 targets.
6. P-36
A heavy-class missile with a strategic launch complex, which at the time of its creation was capable of overcoming any enemy missile defense system. The missile carried a thermonuclear charge and had three warheads without an individual guidance system. There was a variant of a missile with a multi-unit part. Launch preparation - just 5 minutes.
7. RT-20
Intercontinental ballistic missile RT-20, which is transported by a special tracked self-propelled unit made on the basis of the chassis of the T-10M tank. In the west, this unit received the index SS-X-15 "Scrooge". The first public demonstration of the RT-20 took place on November 7, 1965 in Moscow.
The photo, by the way, was taken at the parade from the first row.
