Many people know that in Russia the fate of the old maidens was sad. They were forbidden to participate in dances, festivities, prepare food for a wedding, and bake bread. It is undesirable to be present at the birth of a woman or a cow. It was forbidden for "vekovukha" to live in their own home, to dress beautifully … In short, the fate of an unmarried woman was already unenviable after 20 years, to be sure.
Many psychologists believe that the irrational desire of some modern women to marry at least someone is connected with these cruel traditions - genetic memory is triggered.
However, it was not so simple with unmarried men. Despite the fact that the time frame allowed men to remain single longer - up to 25 years old - at 30 they were already considered elderly. And every year their chances for a young bride melted more and more. To be content with such an overripe groom already had to choose from among the girls, "age-old", or from those whose chastity was in question.
Why was a bachelor getting married? Even if we do not take into account the fact that both male and female hands were needed on the farm, there were also other reasons. The fact is that the creation of a family was a sign of psychological maturity. Therefore, a man who never got a wife was not considered a full member of society. His opinion was not taken into account either in the family or at the gathering. Nobody took him seriously, and he always remained a boy for his fellow villagers. And to start making fun of the bachelor, listing his possible flaws - generally a nice thing.
Bachelors were divided into two types: "carrots" and "obabki".
"Morkovnik"(a pie with carrot filling) is someone who has never been married.
The main reason for this sad phenomenon among the people was, of course, impotence, which was not a sin to mention aloud on occasion.
Another type of bachelor was called "Obabki"(boletus). These are the men who became widowers in adulthood (often with a bunch of children). The meaning of the comparison was that very few people wanted to eat overripe boletus. In the same way, few young girls dreamed of an elderly husband with a bunch of other people's children. A chance for such a man to arrange his personal life was those very centuries …
You can also find the word in dictionaries "Subordinate" … This was the name of a middle-aged bachelor, by analogy with a long and dry log, which will quickly burn out, but will not give the required heat. Roughly the same people thought about the male abilities of subordinates.
So it turns out that not only unmarried women suffered from discrimination. But single men after 25 were also not in the best position. They were laughed at, humiliated, and denied the right to vote. So both of these categories were quite in balance, and could find consolation in each other's company.
Here, after all, what's the matter … The patriarchal system is not only about how a young girl is forced to marry, but an unmarried girl is bullied. This is about how everyone is forced to do something, both women and men. This should not be forgotten either.
