An international team of astrophysicists has discovered a supermassive black hole, which, together with molecular cold clouds, activates the formation of new stars.

Scientists made a similar discovery while studying the cluster of galaxies Abell 2597, which is located a billion light years from our planet. Astrophysicists conducted research at the Paranal Observatory in Chile using the Large Telescope.

Astrophysicists have carried out observations of the galaxy cluster and have come to the conclusion that molecular clouds are the source of the gas that falls on the galactic core. When approaching a black hole, these clouds activate the process of star formation. The study examined the movement and location of cold gas that forms an accretion stream towards a supermassive black hole located in the center of a giant elliptical galaxy - the brightest galaxy in the cluster, which is surrounded by a plasma cloud. Cold gas tries to rise to the surface of the galaxy, as a result of which the formation of new stars is activated. In fact, the process of formation and birth of new stars occurs arbitrarily.

The distance over which this cold gas stretched, scientists have estimated at several tens of parsecs, and the mass of molecular clouds at a million of the Earth's planets.

This discovery radically changed the idea that black holes feed clouds of hot gas or, in other words, devour space bodies, including stars.

It should be noted that the accretion flow is matter attracted by the gravity of a massive object. If we talk about black holes, then it must be said that matter rotates in the form of a super-hot accretion flow in orbit, accelerating to tremendous speeds.
