The movement of scientific thought in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was so rapid that scientists fell into a certain arrogance. Everything that could not be explained in the structure of the human body was immediately declared rudimentary, ‘superfluous’: tonsils, thymus, pineal gland, appendix …

At the beginning of the twentieth century, after Ilya Mechnikov discovered putrefactive fermentation in the intestines, it was agreed that the large intestine was not needed, and surgeons cut it out from more than a thousand advanced supporters of science …

But gradually science rehabilitated the "rudiments" one by one.

Currently, Ukrainian and American oncologists have come to almost the same conclusions: people with removed tonsils (tonsils) are affected by cancer three times more often. The same thing, they say, happens to those who have lost their appendix. The Americans, by the way, at one time were most zealous in the fight against "extra" organs. The tonsils, and at the same time the appendix, they cut out in a row to all newborns. And when in the 50s of the last century there was an epidemic of poliomyelitis, these children were sick more severely and died first.

And here's what's interesting: by the time they were drafted into the army, the Udalyans were 20 cm shorter than their peers, frail, sickly and mentally retarded. It was then that they realized that the tonsils and appendix play an important role in immunity. Now American experts admit: out of a million US residents whose tonsils were removed, 999 thousand did not need it. Removing the tonsils and appendix is like cutting off a piece of the immune system.

Research has shown that the role of the tonsils is to protect the body from infections. It is on them that more than 70% of harmful microbes that enter our body along with the air settle. In addition, the tonsils produce biological substances that help the synthesis of cells involved in hematopoiesis.

Those who have parted with tonsils develop secondary immunodeficiency (AIDS) - they are more likely to suffer from inflammatory and allergic diseases of the upper respiratory tract (pharyngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, bronchitis), influenza and other diseases. And recently, Ukrainian scientists said that tonsils resist cancer: after studying several hundred case histories, experts found out that patients with removed tonsils suffer from cancer of the upper respiratory tract, digestive tract and lungs 3-8 times more often than others. Depressions in the tonsils (crypts) turned out to be a kind of laboratory, where the antigenic composition of what comes from the outside (food, air, microorganisms) is recognized, and then protective proteins are formed.

Scientists have isolated several protein compounds from the tonsils with active immunomodulatory properties. Studying their effect on cancer cells of the larynx and human blood, we found that they are capable of killing, on average, every fifth such cell. When these compounds were administered to animals, their tumor survival was significantly improved.

It is important to refrain from surgery in the smallest children also because the tonsils prevent food allergies. Statistics show: 70 percent of children with dysbiosis and food allergies do not have tonsils.

Scientists concluded that the tonsils, for example, belong to the central organs that control the local immunity of the mucous membranes. In addition, for immunity, they are equal in value to such luminaries as the thymus gland and bone marrow. Now doctors are sure that it is absolutely impossible to remove the tonsils before reaching the age of 8, and even at an older age it is highly undesirable. The fact is that the mucous membranes open in the folds of the tonsils a kind of trap for insidious antigens and at the same time a special type of B-lymphocytes develops here, which are responsible for the safety of the respiratory tract and the upper digestive tract. Their development begins already in an 18-week-old fetus, it is especially intense at the age of 3 to 8 years, later the intensity of B-lymphocyte production declines, but never completely stops. In addition, inflammation of the tonsils is a kind of natural vaccination that allows the body to become immune to the antigen that caused the inflammation, for example, streptococcus or a certain strain of influenza virus, for many years. Accordingly, the earlier the tonsils are removed, the more defenseless our body is against infections of the mucous membranes, pharynx and esophagus. It is interesting that the removal of tonsils in the Middle Ages was carried out simply: the doctor scratched them out of the patient's throat with his nails.

Adenoids have a similar function. Together with the palatine, lingual and laryngeal tonsils, the adenoids form the so-called Pirogov's lymphoid ring, a closed line of defense against infection. Pull one link of the chain and all defense will crumble to dust.

And, of course, let's not forget about the appendix. In the submucosal layer of the walls of the appendix, a large number of lymphatic follicles were found, which protect the intestines from both infectious and oncological diseases. For the abundance of lymphoid tissue, the appendix is even sometimes called the "intestinal tonsil". This is a comparison that does not lame: if the tonsils in the pharynx are a barrier to infection, tearing into the respiratory tract, then the appendix "inhibits" microbes that try to multiply in the contents of the intestine.

Scientists from the Duke University Medical Center (USA) were convinced that the appendix has an important function - it serves as a depot of beneficial bacteria living in the intestines, helping to form immunity.

The beneficial bacteria that live in our intestines not only help digestion, but also support immunity. They synthesize antibodies - immunoglobulins and mucin, which suppress the reproduction of harmful microbes. But sometimes the beneficial bacteria cannot fight the infection, and diarrhea occurs. It is a protective response to infection in which disease-causing bacteria are removed from the intestinal tract. However, useful ones are also taken out. But some of them will certainly remain in the appendix. The entrance to it is very narrow - no more than 1-2 mm, so it is quite difficult for harmful microbes to penetrate there. And when the diarrhea ends, beneficial microbes re-colonize the entire intestine.

As you know, lymphoid tissue takes an active part in all, without exception, the protective reactions of the body. Its islets-divisions are scattered throughout the body and control certain parts of it. If a virus, a pathogenic microorganism, in a word, a foreign antigen enters through an abrasion, a wound, then the lymph node nearest to the place of penetration of the "saboteur" will enter into a protective reaction. When antigenic sabotage is massive and cannot be easily suppressed by local forces, a general mobilization is declared and the entire immune system is involved in defense.

There is such a channel in the body through which the intake of foreign substances goes on a regular basis - this is the digestive tract. True, the antigens present in the composition of food, before entering the bloodstream, are destroyed to universal proteins that do not carry the imprint of foreign genetic information. And yet, along with non-antigenic molecules, antigenic ones can slip through here. It is for this case that lymphoid garrisons are "exposed" in the intestine: the so-called Peyer's patches in the small intestine and follicles in the appendix. But it would be wrong to think that the appendix takes part in defense reactions only of local significance. Thanks to the powerful lymphoid apparatus, the appendix becomes a constant and active participant in all processes in the body, accompanied by a somewhat pronounced immune response. For example, clinical observations have shown that in people with a removed appendix, the engraftment of transplanted organs is better!

So, to date, two main functions of the appendix have been proven: firstly, the appendix is an important organ of the immune system, and secondly, it serves as a breeding ground for E. coli. This bacillus is the most important component of the body's microflora. Without it, normal absorption of certain fatty acids, carbohydrates, amino acids, nucleic acids is impossible, without it vitamin K and B vitamins are not synthesized, it participates in the regulation of water-salt metabolism, secretes peptidoglycan, which stimulates our immune system and performs some other functions.

If the palatine tonsils are removed (or have missed the infection), then, most likely, the stomach will just hurt or the disease will develop, the pathogen of which has entered the body. And if the appendix is missing? Then the pathogen will go further into the inguinal nodes. In the patient, they are likely to become inflamed, which means that a malfunction of the pelvic organs (i.e., the genitourinary tract) may follow, and this, in turn, may follow, at best - inflammation of the bladder or urinary tract, and at worst, infertility.

Therefore, it is so necessary to preserve this organ of the immune system, and the best prevention of inflammation of the appendix is a proper, healthy diet, as well as a healthy lifestyle, rejection of synthetic drugs and vaccines, etc.

It is important to remember that only ignorance leads to the fact that some organs are declared "redundant" by doctors.
