According to the law, every Russian is entitled to 150 cubic meters of wood for free for building a house every 25 years and another 50 cubic meters of wood every 5 years for house repairs.

This is what our country has always been rich in, so it is forests. Apparently, therefore, the "Forest Code" of the Russian Federation provides for the possibility of allocating forests to citizens for building a house free of charge. It would seem that there is a real chance to save money on construction. But how things really are.

How much wood can you get for building a house?

The legislation provides for the allocation of forest to a citizen of the Russian Federation and his family for the construction of a house in an amount of no more than 150 cubic meters once every 25 years. At the same time, it is additionally provided for the allocation of forest also for house renovation, up to 50 cubic meters once every five years. The norms for forest allocation and the timing of its provision may differ in different constituent entities of the Russian Federation. At the same time, citizens who have lost their homes due to a fire or an emergency have the right to an extraordinary forest allocation upon presentation of appropriate certificates.

How the forest is allocated for building a house

The forest is allocated to citizens in the form of a felling plot. Moreover, it can be cut down both with your own hands and with the help of relatives or specialized firms. In addition, the cut timber must be somehow delivered to the construction site. The forestry enterprise gives permission for the removal of timber, which allocates a plot, since it is necessary not only to cut down trees on it, but also to put things in order after itself.

The pitfalls of a free forest for building a house

It is very difficult for an ignorant person to determine how much lumber and what quality will be obtained from the forest on the allotted plot. So it is very likely that instead of the promised 150 cubic meters, it will be possible to obtain at best 100. At the same time, it is not at all a fact that out of these hundred all wood can be used for building a house, some may be rejected due to insufficient thickness. So if you have no cronyism or acquaintances in the forestry, the enterprise for obtaining timber for construction for free turns into a lottery.

It is also necessary to remember that we live in Russia, where bureaucracy rules everything. It may take you several years to complete all the necessary papers for obtaining a free forest, so you should not hope for a quick housewarming.

If you managed to cut down and take out the forest intended for you to the construction site, it still needs to be prepared for construction, which is a very difficult task for an ignorant person. Therefore, many specialized firms offer an exchange of a plot of 150 cubic meters allocated to you for 15 cubic meters of finished scaffolding, and such offers are in great demand.

So, before pinning high hopes on getting a free forest for construction, think carefully about what you will do with it when you get it, and whether such a gamble is worth your time and effort.
