Each of us yawns on average 5-10 times a day. Yawning catches up with us in moments of fatigue, lies in wait in a stuffy room, and it is also contagious. For a long time, the causes and functions of this phenomenon remained a mystery. Research has shown that yawning is very beneficial!

When you yawn, several processes are triggered in the body at once: the volume of the nasopharynx increases, the auditory canals are blocked, the blood is saturated with oxygen, and natural ventilation of the lungs occurs. There can be many reasons for this phenomenon, let's highlight the main ones:

1. OVERHEATING

Research by American scientist Andrew Gallup1have shown that yawning is a kind of "conditioner" for cooling the brain and improving its function.

2. STRESS

Yawning can act as a natural sedative. So the body does not allow us to fall into a stupor in a stressful situation, "rebooting" the brain2.

3. FATIGUE

When we are tired, oxygen activates areas of the brain that are not functioning when blood flow is poor, which helps us to invigorate.

4. INFORMATION OVERLOAD

With mental strain, nerve cells begin to work slower4… Yawning in this case is a signal of the need to be distracted and rest a little.

Obsessive yawning can be a symptom of serious disorders in the body:

“One who yawns widely makes seven others yawn,” says a French proverb. Indeed, about 60% of the world's population is prone to collective yawning.

In Japan, large companies practice unusual rest breaks: workers are shown videos of people yawning, after which they start yawning themselves. Experiments have shown that yawning affects areas of the brain associated with empathy. Therefore, we are more likely to respond to the yawn of a loved one than a stranger. However, do not rush to conclude that you have ceased to be loved if the loved one does not yawn with you. Scientists have not yet established whether joint yawning can be an indicator of a good relationship. Doctors unanimously advise yawning as often as possible.
