Brian Johnson is very ambitious. The founder and CEO of Neuroscience Kernel wants to "push the boundaries of human intelligence."
He plans to do this with neuroprosthetics - brain augmentation that can improve mental function and cure brain disorders. Simply put, Kernel hopes to put a chip in your brain.
It is not yet clear how this will work. There is a lot of exciting talk about the possibilities of this technology, but what the public knows about the technology is still just an idea. A very big idea.
The shape this technology will ultimately take is still unknown. Johnson uses the term "brain chip", but this terminology is generally for convenience. Modern neuroprosthetics is moving towards non-invasive procedures, that is, without opening the patient's skull and placing new equipment in the brain. One of the directions is the so-called injection sensors.
It may sound strange, but Johnson has a business plan for how to succeed. During his first semester at university, he built a profitable business selling cell phones to fellow students. By the age of 30, he founded the online payment company Braintree, which he sold six years later to PayPal for $ 800 million. Of these, he used 100 million to create the core of his company in 2016, it includes more than 30 people.
Johnson says the idea means more to him than money. He was raised as a Mormon in Utah and spent two years in Ecuador doing missionary work. He says that he has a great desire to improve the lives of others.
He spent decades trying to figure out himself and his mind. One day, looking at the landscape of human history, he decided that he needed to make the world a better place. At the same time, he even had to abandon his past faith, because he does not want to live in anticipation of heavenly heaven, but plans to build heaven right here on Earth.
According to Johnson, the idea of creating a future augmetic is deeply personal for him. Between the ages of 24 and 34, he suffered from deep depression as he watched first his father and then his stepfather courageously fight for his failing mental health. This inspired him to work for the future.
Trying to understand himself and in this increasingly complex world, Johnson held 12 paid dinners with the most prominent people of our time he knew. And he began each lunch with a question: how would you like to see the world of 2-50?
With slight variations, the answers were the same: climate, education, healthcare, AI, governance, and security. However, once one smart man suddenly told him that by the year 50 he needed to improve his brain.
And then an insight descended on Johnson:
“The brain is everything we are, everything we do, and everything we strive for. It seemed to me obvious that the brain, on the one hand, is the most perfect tool for cognizing the world, on the other, it is our blind spot and problem as a species. Therefore, I decided that since all the problems of people as a species lie in their mind, then this mind needs to be improved."
