The Appalachian foothills have become the site of a medical anomaly that is simply impossible to believe in existence. In the 1800s, in eastern Kentucky, a family lived in complete isolation, whose members had one very striking distinguishing feature - blue skin!

The reason for this was the union of two people with recessive genes and subsequent intermarriage and inter-related sexual relations of their descendants.

The mystery behind the eerie painting depicting the Fugate family (Fugates), excited the minds of people for tens of years and was unraveled only at the end of the 20th century. This story dates back to the early 19th century, when the French orphan Martin Fugate (Martin fugate) to claim this land.

Martin Fugate immigrated from France in 1820 and married Elizabeth Smith, a Kentucky native with a very pale complexion. Both he and she had a very rare recessive gene that causes blue skin. Four of their seven children inherited their parents' skin color.

This was due to the so-called methemoglobinemia (or argyria, "gene-G") - a feature in which the amount of oxygen in the blood is greatly reduced. The color of the blood of such people is much darker than usual, and the skin takes on a blue tint. Since the family lived in a village with a small population, closely related marriages caused a large number of blue-skinned children.

Interestingly, the Fugates were famous for their good health and did not differ from the others except for the color of their skin.

The Fugates were first discovered in 1958, when one of the ‘blue men’, Luke Combs (Luke combs), took his sick blonde bride to the hospital at the University of Kentucky. However, the doctor was more interested in the man than his wife.

The fact is that the body of these people produces a lot of hemoglobin, which regulates the distribution of oxygen in the blood. With constant hard physical work, the body of such people adapts, the rhythm of respiration and the volume of the lungs change.

Argyria can also be an acquired disease caused by overuse of silver salts and can be fatal.

So, before the spread of antibiotics, silver salts and colloidal silver were widely used as antiseptic drugs. Captain Fred Walters was prescribed silver as a cure for a nervous disorder, causing his skin to turn so blue that by 1891 he was showing himself on various shows and getting paid for it. At that time, the toxic effect of silver was unknown. Walters continued to take silver to maintain his "lucrative" skin color. However, in 1923, Walters died of a silver overdose.

As soon as silver was found to be unsafe, a warning was issued in Florida. The warning was accompanied by photographs of victims of argyria. In the photo above, you see a sick person and a healthy person, the difference in skin color is obvious. If you look on the Internet for information about preparations containing colloidal silver, you can see that some drugs "have absolutely no side effects", some are "unsafe", some are "ineffective", it all depends on who finances the release of the drug. The Food and Drug Administration (USA) states that all products containing colloidal silver are not safe.

Some modern drugs also contain hazardous substances that lead to argyria.

Rosemary Jacobs started using nasal drops containing colloidal silver when she was 11 years old. Over the years, her skin turned blue. Despite the fact that the girl stopped using the drops, her face remained bluish, because the silver particles were embedded in the skin and organs. In the 70s (after the photo above was taken) Jacobs underwent a cosmetic procedure to remove the top layers of the skin. Her skin is currently pink but stained.

Montana-based freedom fighter Stan Jones has tried two unsuccessful Senate positions (2002 and 2007). He, too, is a victim of argyria. Jones began using colloidal silver on his own initiative. He still uses this remedy and believes in its healing effect.

Paul Karason started using colloidal silver 15 years ago. He self-medicated: he tried to cure dermatitis, for which he rubbed a concentrate of colloidal silver into his skin and drank a tincture from the same remedy. Carason still drinks colloidal silver, he believes that this is a cure for all diseases.

The color changed so gradually that it was not noticeable either to Paul Carason himself or to those close to him.

In fact, the use of silver can be fatal, but the normalized doses did not kill the man, but, on the contrary, made him even invulnerable to various kinds of infections.

However, some cases of abnormal human skin color can still be explained through genetics. For example, some Indians, indigenous to South America, received a bluish skin color due to the fact that they have a special custom of intercourse with their close relatives, as a result of which a malfunction in the genetic code is obtained.
