Today in Asia, tourists now and then come across the swastika symbol, depicted not only on buildings and structures, but even on faces. This symbol hurts the eyes of a Russian tourist, and this is understandable: our people encountered the swastika in its rather disgusting manifestation. But why do Asians love her so much?
The symbol of fascism, death and grief - this is what the swastika is for Russia and many Western countries, we do not associate it with anything else, while for the peoples inhabiting Asia, the swastika carries a completely different ancient meaning and is very revered. Regardless of which direction the "corners" are bent, from Sanskrit the word "svasti" literally translates as a wish for every good to a person.
Accordingly, the image of the swastika is interpreted as a protective symbol that protects and promotes prosperity. Asians gladly decorate the facades of their houses with a swastika, embroider it on dresses, lay it out on holidays with candles in front of temples and they even paint it on the forehead of their children to protect them from negativity.
For centuries and even thousands of years, the swastika has been associated with the sun rolling across the firmament, giving life and warmth, with new circles of rebirth. Some of her images were dated back to 20 thousand years BC. Even the tribes of North America used a swastika image stylized to match their culture.
Scientists still do not agree on whether there are differences between the direction in which the "legs" of the swastika are bent. Some of them believe that the more rare opposite direction is nothing more than an attempt to mystify the existing symbol, to endow it with other magical properties, often opposite to that of prosperity.
But other scientists think there isn't much of a difference. And even if you draw a swastika on the flag, and then go with it to the battlefield, the swastika will look different from different sides of the flag.
Be that as it may, tourists traveling in India or Nepal, it is better to familiarize yourself with this cultural and historical feature of the region in advance. Just because Hitler vulgarized and defaced ancient symbolism does not mean that Asians want to offend us.
