Looking through the work of "Soyuzmultfilm", you can see an interesting feature. A number of cartoons by this Soviet studio were dedicated to brave, decent boys or men who research something, study, help someone, restore justice or serve other lofty goals (see video). Looking at them, you are surprised - how healthy, realistic, inspiring these characters look! These are real role models!
Question: where are such types in modern popular animation? Remember at least one similar one. There are tons of cartoons every year, but where are these characters? Full of dignity and courage, will and virtue - male human characters. Where? If we look at today's popular cartoon content, we will see numerous stories with inhuman characters: with some funny animals, with revived technology, with superhumans, who, of course, are not really people and do not live a human life. If a bold and decent human character is placed in the center of the plots from popular cartoon studios, then it turns out to be a girl (numerous conveyor of courageous female heroines: Rapunzel …, Brave at heart, Frozen, Moana and others) …
Look at this obvious point. The type of boy / guy / man - a daredevil, researcher, fighter for justice - is practically absent in cartoons today! At the same time, it is absolutely clear that there can be no technical problems here. Drawing a cartoon about a boy who wants to help an elderly person, learn a foreign language or investigate some mysterious riddle is technically no more difficult than drawing a cartoon about Shrek, a minion or a chosen, masculine princess.
Ask and answer the appropriate question. All that is needed is there: there is a need for decent screen examples for boys, there is a need for technology, and multi-production is actively functioning. Why are healthy, worthy male heroes, which Soyuzmultfilm had, seem to be blacklisted by manufacturers today?
Another interesting point is how the model of relations between male and female characters looks in today's cartoons, which, in continuation of the raised topic, allows one to evaluate one of the images of a male hero in modern animation.
Implementation of a negative model of relations between men and women in Disney products
Disney's Rapunzel: A Tangled Story (2010), Zootopia (2016) and Moana (2016) similarly promote a negative male-female relationship. The images of the male and female characters in the main tandem and the beginning of their interaction are built in these three stories according to the same scheme. Watch the video:
The female character is represented by a noble "strong woman" (Rapunzel is a princess with magical powers / Judy Hopps is a police officer investigating an important case / Moana is a princess with magical powers and a high mission). The male character is a narcissistic criminal (Flynn Ryder is a thief / Nick Wilde is a fraudster / Maui is the kidnapper of some important artifact, which caused the peace to be disrupted). The cooperation of the paired characters in these stories begins with the fact that a woman by force and / or blackmail makes a man obey her and perform the actions necessary for her (see video). Rapunzel beats Flynn and blackmails him with the thing he needs, Judy arrests Nick and blackmails him with information about his tax evasion, Moana beats Maui and then makes him help her with the help of the "power of the ocean".
Watching cartoon after cartoon with the same idea or model of behavior, the child-viewer inevitably remembers it. In the described case, the role model of relations between the sexes is remembered, where a woman is a priori strong and noble, and a man is an unworthy weakling and a scoundrel, whom a woman must force to do what she needs.
