Fantasies for the sake of parental attention

Belief in reincarnation and transmigration of souls is one of the most common pseudoscientific delusions. For example, according to the US National Science Foundation, almost one in ten Americans believes in reincarnation and transmigration.

Official science does not confirm these things. Moreover, the research of Ian Stevenson and his colleagues has been repeatedly criticized by scientists and psychiatrists and has even been recognized as the model and gold standard of pseudoscience. So, childhood memories of past lives were recorded years and entire decades later, when these children had already become adults, or from the words of their relatives. Some children even managed to get to know their "past" family, and it was impossible to distinguish the truthful details in the story from embellishment.

Most of the cases Stevenson describes took place in India, where reincarnation is the basis of religion, and children are immersed in all this from birth. Immersion in past lives with the help of hypnosis also looks dubious. Human memory is already an unreliable thing (especially with experienced stress), and hypnosis additionally awakens long-forgotten sensations and impressions and even creates false memories. Moreover, Stevenson himself wrote in books that he used LSD and mescaline to spur his own memories of a past life.

But what about other children, not Hindus, who talk about their past lives? Psychiatrists are sure that it's all about the rich imagination of children. And the amazing details that they give out about their past life, in most cases, are gleaned from books and films.

For example, the Finnish psychiatrist Reime Kampfman tells about one of his patients, who allegedly in a past life was a peasant in 13th century England and even spoke Old English. However, later it turned out that the girl recites one of the old poems, which she saw in the library book as a child and eventually completely forgot about it, but in the subconscious the information stuck.

Another example is given by the American psychologist Raymond Moody. His patient, under hypnosis, saw himself as a member of an Indian tribe and described in detail the temples and structures of his settlement. However, it turned out that many years ago, as a small child, this patient together with his parents went on an excursion in an ancient Indian city, and these ruins, supplemented by childhood fantasies, were deposited in his memory.

Often children themselves sincerely believe in these notions. Consciously or not, this is how babies try to attract attention from their parents. And to admit to an invention for them means to lose this attention. Therefore, they throw in all new non-existent details and details.
