I received a letter from Vladimir Khomich:

I am a graduate of the Borisoglebsk Military Aviation School in 1985. In 1984 I flew on a MiG-21 aircraft at the Povorino airfield. It was the second half of July or August. Flights were performed on the second shift. Towards the end of the shift, I had a flight to the zone for simple aerobatics. I don't remember the number of the zone, but the departure into it was from the first turn with a climb by permission of the flight director. After taking off and the first turn to the left by 90 degrees, I took the course of retreat into the aerobatics zone.

Immediately something incomprehensible began on the air. I was strictly forbidden to climb. The crew, who completed the mission, was prohibited from descending, although he left the aerobatics zone and entered the air traffic pattern of the airfield. He and I were constantly asked if we were observing an outsider on the left along the course. Neither I nor the cadet leaving the aerobatics zone saw any stranger. (I remember this cadet, he wrote to him, he confirmed everything). I was forbidden in the zone vertical maneuvers (slide, dive, etc.), only turns were allowed. At an altitude of 2000 meters, I wound them instead of four on the instructions of eight. And all this time I was looking around trying to see what was causing such confusion. I never saw anything. Reported the completion of the mission, with the permission of the flight director, went to the airfield scheme and landed. Arriving at the starting house, I found out the reason.

Finds himself in this aerobatics zone besides our "flares" there was one more object on the radar screen. He behaved like this: the object approached the plane leaving the zone, then mine. Then he left the aerobatics zone in the direction of the airfield and hovered in place. At this time, almost everyone who was on earth at that time saw him. The visibility was good (8-10 km). Separate cumulus clouds (2-3 points, no more). A little haze because the sun was setting (end of the second shift).

According to eyewitness accounts: cigar-shaped object, hanging in one place … Didn't move. Then he began to slowly rotate around the longitudinal axis and topple over to one end. Then he hid behind a cloud. Everything, they did not observe him anymore. The flight director seated all the cadets who were in the air. Of the instructors, there was only one crew in the air (flight commander and instructor pilot). The flight director sent the "spark" to see what was going on there, but this crew was returning after performing difficult aerobatics and the remaining fuel did not allow them to carry out a long search. They also did not observe this object. On the second day, the responsible commission arrived at the airfield. All were interviewed. We wrote explanatory notes (who saw what, how they saw, etc.). They asked me not to talk about this especially for 5 years.

Currently (2015) Povorino airport is closed, but guarded. The guards are subordinate to the commander of the Borisoglebsk school, the airfield is on the balance sheet of the Ministry of Defense.
