In the photo above, you can contemplate one of the most ferocious predators of Antarctica - the leopard sea. From the outside, it seems as if the photographer was lucky and caught a very beautiful dynamic shot … but in reality, everything is much more complicated.

Photographer Paul Nicklen has been hunting for rare wildlife shots for a very long time. This is his job and hobby at the same time. To capture the thunderstorm of the coastal waters of Antarctica - the leopard sea, he ventured to go under water. He was warned that it was extremely dangerous, but passion still outweighed common reason.

To say that he was scared while diving is to say nothing. A large number of cases are reliably known when the leopard seal attacked people. This large marine predator is used to hunting warm-blooded mammals - weighty seals and penguins.

Having descended under the water with a camera, Paul was terribly cowardly. He met a huge specimen of a leopard seal. The beast, as if he felt the fear of a man, and rushed to the attack. It was a very large specimen. A mature female.

The predator approached Paul and without hesitation grabbed the head of the scared to death photographer in her jaws. However, a very funny twist took place further. After holding Paul's head in her mouth for a few seconds, the female released her and swam away somewhere …

What a surprise the photographer was when she returned with a live penguin in her teeth and invited a man to feast on it. When Paul ignored the request and the joyful penguin swam away, the female did not give up and caught another live penguin, releasing it right in front of Paul's nose. The photographer realized that they were studying him and wanted to see how he hunts, but did not follow the wishes of the leopard seal and refused to eat the penguin. Then the female decided that her new friend was sick, therefore she was not able to hunt. Therefore, she began to supply him with half-dead and frail penguins. And then just the dead …

She began to bring them directly into the cell, probably believing that it was through her that Paul was feeding. The penguin man refused to eat. Then the leopard tore one of them to pieces, showing how to handle them.

In an interview, Paul admits that he was in tears at that moment. But there was nothing he could do, since it is illegal by law to interact with Antarctic animals. One can only observe. The result is unique photographs for National Geographic.

This is how the photographer himself recalls this incredible story:
