There are books you read for fun. There are books that make you smarter after reading them. Here is a book that, depending on the interests of the reader, copes with both tasks …
The author claims that there was no Shakespeare. But who then was that Sheik-spir (through a hyphen), i.e. "Awesome spear"?
How many original versions of Hamlet were there, and which one is considered “correct”?
Why is the main character named Hamlet, and not Ham or Amlet, as his prototypes from earlier works on the same plot were called?
Who is hiding behind each of the names of the characters in the tragedy, and most importantly - why?
What events in English and world history are actually described in Hamlet?
Who and how encrypted all this - and much, much more - in the well-known play a long time ago? Or is it still unknown?..
As a specialist in Scandinavian philology, a translator and teacher of English and Danish with many years of experience, the author proceeds from the simple understanding that English words are hieroglyphs that acquire meaning only within a specific combination and sentence. For this reason, original works of such a level as Hamlet can - and must - be read and understood at different levels. If the translator does not have this understanding, most of the underlying meanings are lost as a result, and the Russian reader is an actor, director, literary critic, etc. - faces the usual more or less interesting and poetic retelling.
An attempt to combine poetry, wisdom and codes of "Hamlet" in Russian was undertaken for the first time.
