Aging is one of the main causes of a wide range of diseases, so scientists from all over the world are trying to slow it down by any means. In 2016, the substance urolithin A, produced by drinking pomegranate juice, was shown to improve the condition of the muscle tissues of elderly mice, and now researchers from the École Polytechnique de Lausanne have shown that the same effect can be observed in humans.

It is believed that the substance urolithin A is capable of activating the muscle tissue of living organisms and destroying damaged mitochondria, which are a kind of energy stations of cells. Researchers have noticed that after the removal of non-functioning mitochondria, healthy organelles with the same functions begin to divide and multiply. Ultimately, more energy begins to be produced in the body of a living being, and aging occurs much slower than usual.

Muscle tissue can be renewed

In 2016, this effect was observed in Caenorhabditis elegans worms and mice. A dose of urolithin A was injected into their bodies, and subsequently it was found that the worms began to live 46% longer than their counterparts, and the mice improved their endurance by 42%. With all this, the increase in performance was due to the improvement of muscle cells, and not due to an increase in their number.

Experimental on humans

After an experiment on animals, Professor Nate Shevchik suggested that the substance could have the same effect on the human body. Ultimately, the hypothesis was tested on 60 elderly volunteers - they were divided into several groups, and were given 250, 500 and 1000 milligrams of urolithin A. Throughout the study, the participants were sedentary.

At the end of the experiment, the scientists took blood tests from the subjects and checked whether they contained biomarkers of the injected substance. After receiving confirmation of this and finding that none of them experienced side effects, the scientists announced the results of the study. It turned out that the group that consumed 500 and 1000 milligrams of urolithin A really got rid of non-working mitochondria, and neutralized the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle.

The benefits of pomegranate juice

Ultimately, we can assume that pomegranate juice really has a positive effect on human health. Food supplements and drugs containing urolithin A may be on the market very soon, but before that it is important for researchers to carry out a number of tests. Before using juices, of course, it is recommended to consult with your doctor.

Aging can be slowed down in more extreme ways - for example, with the help of young blood transfusions. The effectiveness of this procedure has been proven in a laboratory experiment on mice, but the technology can be dangerous - you can read about the concerns of scientists in our material.
