The professor set a fantastic goal for himself: to travel and photograph the entire Russian Empire with a camera, in order to leave to the descendants a complete "collection of attractions".
The results of the first expeditions - projections of colored glass plates with images of the distant corners of the empire - were shown to the Tsar on May 3, 1909 in the Alexander Palace of Tsarskoye Selo. Struck by what he saw, Nicholas II entrusted the support of the Prokudin-Gorsky project to the Minister of Railways. The professor has been provided with official transport. With the help of the tsar, Prokudin-Gorsky captured thousands of objects throughout the Russian Empire.
A century later, black and white images will become an anachronism. Long exposures often make people look frozen in photographs of a century ago, while newsreels with their characteristic "jerking" are perceived as deliberately retro today. Color photography, although technologically completely changed over the past century, practically did not surpass the achievements of Prokudin-Gorsky in terms of the quality of the "picture".
Most of the professor's photographs have been lost. The collection of about 1,900 surviving color images kept in the Library of Congress of the United States remained the only documentary evidence of pre-revolutionary Russia in its original colors.
The film tells about the fate and professional feat of Prokudin-Gorsky, gives a panorama of the pre-revolutionary empire and portraits of its contemporaries. In the footsteps of Prokudin-Gorsky, the film crew of Leonid Parfyonov will visit 12 regions to see firsthand the changes that have taken place in the country. The grandchildren of S. M. Prokudin-Gorsky, living in France, as well as experts from the Library of Congress.
