Video: Cargo Cult: Does It Look Like Anything?

The cargo cult, also known as the "religion of airplane worshipers" or the cult of the Gifts of Heaven, is a whole group of religious movements on the islands of the Pacific Ocean. Cargo cults believe that Western goods were created by the spirits of their ancestors and intended for the local people. At the same time, it is believed that white people received control over these objects by dishonest means. The islanders perform rituals similar to the actions of white people to increase these items.
The Pacific Islanders, who first encountered whites in the mid-20th century, were amazed at the incredible abundance that accompanied them. They saw the American military eating delicious stew, sleeping in beautiful houses, and wearing comfortable clothes. At first, having decided that these were their ancestors, the Papuans soon changed their minds. They saw that the arrivals receive all things by air, which means directly from the Land of the Ancestors. This suggested that all the goods were intended for them, the islanders, and the whites only intercept them on the way.
Members of the cult usually do not understand the importance of production or commerce, and their ideas about Western society, its religion and economy can be very naive. Therefore, the islanders believe that the actions of whites - drilling, riding in the jungle in jeeps, listening to radio signals - these are magical actions with which you can get magic goods from heaven from your ancestors.
In the most famous cargo cults of coconut palms and straw, replicas of runways, airports and radio towers are built. Members of the cult build them, believing that these structures will attract transport planes filled with cargo, which are considered messengers of spirits. Believers regularly conduct drill exercises and some kind of military marches, using branches instead of rifles and drawing buttons and the inscription "USA" on the body of the order.
Classic cargo cults were prevalent during and after World War II. A huge amount of cargo was dropped on the islands during the Pacific campaign against the Japanese Empire, which made a fundamental change in the life of the islanders. Industrialized clothing, canned food, tents, weapons and other useful items appeared in huge quantities on the islands in order to provide for the army. A little of this abundance was also shared with the locals.
At the end of the war, the air bases were abandoned, and the cargo ("cargo") no longer arrived. The islanders decided that either their ancestors had abandoned them, or the greedy whites had become completely insolent and now take everything for themselves.
The cult cannot exist without a mystical prophet, and the figure of the all-merciful John Froome became such a character. Residents of Vanuatu, faced with American soldiers, longed to know their names, but for the locals they were just unspoken gibberish, so they all merged into one image of a certain "John From the Country of Yusei" (John From USA). This is how the collective image of John Froome appeared, which, after generations, turned into a metaphor for the Great Ancestor.
One more attribute of the cargo cult can be distinguished: the so-called ritual inactivity; Having built ritual airfields, the islanders began to wait for the coming of their ancestors in many days of silence and vigil without leaving the place. Dreaming of "heavenly gifts", the savages stopped hunting, cultivating the land and generally slaughtered for food and households.
