When you hear the word "mercury", what are the first thoughts in your head? Danger! I! Anxiety!

FORBIDDEN TECHNOLOGIES playlist

Yes, it was these ideas that our parents laid in us, and from school textbooks we know that mercury vapors can cause irreparable harm to health. There is even criminal liability for the storage of this substance, which is clearly spelled out in Article 234 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

But why is mercury so demonized? Why is everything done today so that we are very afraid to even come into contact with her? Maybe so that we, God forbid, did not do this ?: … Our ancestors were well acquainted with mercury. She was credited with magical properties, was actively used in alchemy and medicine.

For her sake, states and cities were captured. For example, according to one of the versions, the great Genghis Khan decided to conquer Fergana precisely because the production of mercury was established in this city. And in the writings of the ancient Roman writer Pliny, there is an indication that in those distant times, Rome bought four and a half tons of mercury in Spain. Throughout its centuries of history, mercury has also been associated with the philosopher's stone.

"Give me a sea of mercury and I will turn it into gold." And these are the words of no ancient alchemist, but the mastodon of classical physics, the great Isaac Newton.

This scientist has devoted 30 years of his conscious life to the study of alchemy and mercury in particular. He classified all his research in this area with encryption. All these facts indicate that our ancestors highly appreciated mercury. Back in the second half of the 20th century, this substance was widely used in practice. It was used in tons, in various spheres of life, both in our country and in other parts of the world.

In medicine as well. But at some point, everything changed, and today the entire Internet is screaming about the horrors that will happen to a person who breathed in mercury vapor.

But wait a minute! If mercury is so poisonous, then how was it not noticed during centuries of history? Today, more than 20 minerals of mercury are known, but cinnabar is the main source of it. Mercury is obtained by distillation. But there is another, more crude way. Red stones are simply heated in a furnace until the minerals begin to crack and mercury flows out of them. It seems that this method of extracting mercury was used by our ancestors. Cinnabar itself is an absolutely safe mountain mineral, like mercury in its pure form. Only its compounds with other substances can be toxic. For example, methyl mercury is one of the most dangerous neurotoxins.

There are other poisonous compounds, for example, with arsenic. The safety of pure mercury is beyond question. It is known that people who work directly with pure mercury do not even bother with some kind of safety, protective clothing. Look, this person takes mercury in his mouth and nothing happens to him.

And this one simply lowers his hand to the elbows in liquid metal and is not afraid to die a terrible death. But if this mercury is not dangerous, why are we so afraid of it? Let's figure it out. The unique properties of mercury were of interest not only to researchers of the distant past. For example, in the USSR, in the 80s, rumors of the amazing capabilities of mercury antennas were actively circulating among radio amateurs. In 89, they even wrote about it in the magazine "Radio". Everything was terribly simple.

Mercury was poured into a chemical flask or glass from an electric light bulb and a panicle made of copper, half a meter long, aluminum wires was placed. The neck was sealed with putty or bitumen. The whole structure was installed on a wooden mast. A drop cable ran down from the copper duster to the radio.

According to the testers, almost anything could be caught with such an antenna. Recently, one amateur of experiments decided to repeat the experiment and make an antenna using mercury. Tests have shown that the antenna really works great. An amazing situation developed with a mysterious substance called "red mercury".

Much has been written about her in ancient treatises. This substance was called "red lion" or "philosophical mercury" and attributed to it all the properties of the philosopher's stone. This topic was especially actively raised during perestroika, when the secret archives of the Soviet Union were being opened. It is believed that in the 60s, red mercury could be synthesized in secret laboratories and sold abroad at a price of half a million dollars per kilogram. There were also those who were able to cash in on people's interest in red mercury.
