They say that the black square is the end of everything, what the development of art will lead to, and that Malevich simply depicted the end, bypassing the intermediate stages.

Malevich considered the painting to be an icon. And an icon can also have artistic manifestations and qualities. Moreover, the icon must also have a spiritual component.

The rectangular landscape "Tomato harvesting on the shores of the Red Sea by apoplectic cardinals" was a bright red one-color painting without the slightest signs of depiction (1884). As you can see, both the black and red square of Malevich existed long before it was written in Russia.

He made his debut in 1879 with pop sketches and lyrics (some of them were sung by Joseph Darcier). Then, in 1881, he performed for the first time with a whole play - the comedy "The First Quarrel", staged at the Parisian theater Gimnaz. Billot's comedies (partially co-authored, including with Michel Carré-son and Maurice Annequin) were staged on various Parisian stages at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, in the 1890s. he actively worked as a librettist for operetta (collaborating with Charles Lecoq as well).

The most famous, however, brought Billot a one-time performance in the role of a painter. In 1882, at the invitation of his friend Alphonse Allais, he took part in the Salon of the Inconsistent, exhibiting the painting "Battle of the Negroes in the Dungeon", which was a black rectangle.

Now let's return to Malevich again.

The Black Suprematist Square is the most famous work of Kazimir Malevich, created in 1915, one of the most talked about and most famous paintings in Russian art.
