In October, a monument to our outstanding surgeon, scientist Fyodor Grigorievich Uglov was unveiled in St. Petersburg. In the park that bears his name. Bronze figure of a doctor bending over a patient. On the pedestal are the words of Uglov: "The work of a doctor is extremely humane and noble."

A man is not a century old

He was one of the first in the country to perform complex, unique operations on the heart, lungs, blood vessels, abdominal cavity, including oncological ones. Invented an artificial heart valve and a method for its manufacture and installation. I operated on everything. No wonder the famous American heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, who considered Fyodor Grigorievich his teacher, wrote: "Professor Uglov is your national treasure. He moved surgery as high as you moved the conquest of space."

Angles is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest practicing surgeon on the planet. For the operation he did on the eve of the century. Not for the record. It's just that other doctors in the clinic did not dare to remove a large benign tumor on the patient's neck. The risk of damage to blood vessels is too great, which led to a fatal outcome. The veteran took a chance. The hand did not flinch. Everything went well. Already after the recorded record, he successfully removed a stomach tumor for another woman. There were no metastases. She asked only to Uglov, since she was once his patient and only believed in him.

And Uglov was also a writer. His books have been translated into many languages. Among them - "Are we living our own age?" and "A man is not old enough". He believed that life expectancy largely depends on the person himself.

The Lenin Prize laureate has lived his life. Although heredity is not so hot. Father died at 57, mother - at 75. And the life of Fyodor Grigorievich himself was not sugar. As a student in the early 20s, he contracted typhoid fever, was unconscious for a long time, between life and death. During the Soviet-Finnish war, he served at the front as a senior surgeon of a medical battalion. All 900 days of the siege of Leningrad, he saved the wounded in the besieged city … By his example, he proved that a person can, can live a century if he tries.

Based on his own experience, scientific data, the academician compiled a memo for a Russian centenarian:

1. Love your homeland. And protect her. The rootless do not live long.

2. Love your job. And physical too.

3. Be able to control yourself. Do not be discouraged under any circumstances.

4. Never drink or smoke, otherwise all other recommendations will be useless.

5. Love your family. Know how to answer for her.

6. Maintain your normal weight, no matter what the cost. Don't overeat!

7. Be careful on the road. Today it is one of the most dangerous places to live.

8. Do not be afraid to go to the doctor in time.

9. Save your kids from health-damaging music and TV ads.

10. The mode of work and rest is inherent in the very basis of the work of your body. Love your body, spare it.

11. Individual immortality is unattainable, but the length of your life largely depends on yourself.

12. Do good.

For the first point, the words of Fyodor Grigorievich himself speak eloquently: "If the Lord gave me another hundred years of life, I would not hesitate to give them to the service of the Fatherland, my people, and a special, innermost part of my heart - to my beloved city of St. Petersburg." He really was a patriot of Russia and his city, his associates say. And it can be seen from books and articles.

Slimmer waist - longer life

For the rest of the commandments, I decided to talk with the widow of the academician, candidate of medical sciences Emilia Uglova.

- Emilia Viktorovna, how did you meet?

- I worked as a doctor at a mine in Donbass. Received a ticket to Essentuki, Shakhtar sanatorium. He also rested there. On the second day, he sat down opposite me in the dining room. He was 60, I was 28. And since that day, 44 years have not parted. Until his death in 2008, our son Gregory was born when he was 66. I think everything is predetermined from above. How else to explain that they ended up at the same table? Fate!

- In our age of fashion for weight loss, readers will most of all be interested, I believe, how Fedor Grigorievich ate.

- He didn't have any diets! I ate everything. But little by little. Of course, I never drank alcohol or smoked. He believed that these licensed drugs greatly shorten a person's life, especially intoxicated. Therefore, dry law reigned in the family. The weight was always 70 kg with a height of 170 cm. Once a week I got up on the scales. "Oh, I put on half a kilogram, don't feed me anymore!" I tried to keep my weight stable. Big bellies are bad for your health. Especially in men. This is what I say as a cardiologist. Women are still getting used to it, our nature is like that. And men shouldn't! The big belly presses on the diaphragm. A person feels the heart … He had an athletic figure. Abdominals pumped up, muscles.

- Did you do the exercises?

- Not. I thought that during this time it was better to do something around the house. Vacuum, for example. He knew how to press time. And at the desk. Books, articles, letters … At the dacha he chopped wood, cleaned snow, walked a lot, in winter - skis. Poured cold water from a bucket for many years. He obeyed the regime ironically. I always went to bed at half past eleven. No night gatherings! He believed that the night was given to man for sleep. I got up at half past seven without an alarm clock. Shaved. I had breakfast. At 9 I was already at the institute. He was very much helped to live, in my opinion, love for the profession and people. This was his life. Focused on work, operations. And friendly to anyone who approached him. Many have applied. Not only about diseases, but just for help as to a famous person. And he helped. Although I have never been a deputy. I called, for example, the regional committee secretary in Saratov. "A woman in your city has not been able to get a wheelchair for several years, she lives on the 7th floor. Is it really difficult to resolve the issue?" A few days later, she receives a stroller. Thank you, Fedor Grigorievich. "How little a man needs! - he said. - Pay a little attention to him!" And he always returned home from work joyful. Each time I reported something optimistic and interesting. From day to day. I tried never to upset with bad news, only positive emotions. And everything in the house shone with his arrival. Optimist!

You go fast - they will carry you quietly

- One of his commandments is to protect children from health-damaging music.

- It's about rock music. He studied scientific works about the negative impact of this music on the liver, heart, brain. Where did the loud beats come from? In ancient times, the Middle Ages, those sentenced to death were led to the rhythmic beat of drums. So these sounds in our subconscious were preserved as disturbing. They cause unconscious fear, excitement, negatively affect health and psyche. He himself loved to sing and listen to Russian folk songs, Siberian ones. People's Artist of the USSR Boris Shtokolov borrowed several songs from his repertoire. (Doctors of medical sciences V. Anisimov and G. Zharinov, having processed world statistics, recently found out that rock musicians live on average one and a half times less than classical musicians - E. Ch.)

- And the point about the dangers on the road?

- Fedor Grigorievich himself drove the car artistically, smoothly. I was never distracted while driving. Didn't like fast driving, overtaking. I remembered that once I tried to drive with my friends. They calculated that the gain is 10-15 minutes, but the risk of an accident is great. And he stopped dashing. Speed 70-80 km, no more. And he called others to this. Why risk your life on the roads? We had a Volga for a long time, then we bought a Nissan. I traveled on it for a year, I see, tensely sitting behind the wheel. And then the heart rate was broken once on the plane. And I asked him not to drive again. Still 97 years old!

- Obeyed the doctor! What can you say about his advice not to be afraid and to go to the doctor?

- I confirm as a family doctor - I applied myself on time. And to me and to other specialists. Although he admitted that he also does not like to be treated, like all men. But he didn’t like to get sick even more. True, I tried not to sit on pills. And every year, for many years, he took courses on a unique massage from a family friend, St. Petersburg doctor Vitaly Aleksandrovich Kopylov. Fyodor Grigorievich suffered from a rare ailment - Meniere's syndrome. Inflammation of the middle ear causing dizziness. The causes of the disease are still unknown to medicine. Perhaps, typhoid fever of the distant 20s, blockade or frontal trauma affected. Doctor Kopylov relieved him of dizziness for a long time.

- Academician Leo Bokeria told me that for his centenary, Uglov even danced with you! So really my head was not spinning.

- So he danced with other women when he was a hundred years old! In Sevastopol, where we celebrated his anniversary with comrades-in-arms in the temperance movement. It was fun. He would have lived, I believe, much more than his 104 years, if not for the tragic incident. Fyodor Grigorievich was found to have a stone in his bladder. I went to the clinic, together with the surgeon, I developed a detailed plan of my operation. But it had to be postponed for a week. I didn't like the cardiogram. At night he got up in the ward, stumbled in the dark on a telephone wire, fell backwards like a hobbled one. Broke the neck of the thigh. In the morning - an urgent operation. Heavy. Anesthesia was administered through the spinal cord. Complication, acute renal failure. Then the stone was removed. Already under general anesthesia. Disgusting thing is anesthesia. Well this is a vasospasm. The cerebral vessels were damaged. And the smallest particles of shattered bone got into the brain. But he held on. In the Epiphany frosts, I was chilled while walking. And it was cold in the house. The speech was withdrawn. And on June 22, 2008, he was gone. Left untimely. If not for these operations, anesthesia, Fyodor Grigorievich would have lived for a long time.

Uglov's testament: "People! Love each other!"
