Who was Efremov really? Why did he, the Stalin Prize laureate, suddenly fall under the gun of the KGB? What was it about his books that many of them were banned? It is not surprising that the science fiction writer Ivan Efremov was closely associated with scientific activities. There were many scientists among his colleagues. For example, biochemist Isaac Asimov, inventor Arthur Clarke, philosopher Stanislav Lem, geographer Jules Verne. Efremov, on the other hand, made a huge contribution to science as a paleontologist and geologist.

Finding fossil evidence of our planet's past became a real passion for him. Scientist Efremov stands at the origins of a whole direction in paleontology, taphonomy, the science of burial of fossil forms in geological strata. The writer's scientific views were in many ways revolutionary.

And they remain so to this day. In the main work of his life, "Taphonomy and the Geological Chronicle," Efremov encroached on the holy of holies, the theory of Charles Darwin, which is recognized by most of the world scientific community. Studying the burials of ancient creatures, the researcher came to the conclusion that the gradual evolution from fish to humans, recognized by all, is not entirely correct. For example, the presence of only fish fossils in the oldest sediments does not at all mean that there was no life on land at that period at all.

The fossilized remains of fish were the only ones only because most of the continental deposits were destroyed by the subsequent redrawing of the continents and a change in their contours. And in the layers of deposits corresponding to different historical periods, no, no, and there are strange forms with a more complex structure. That is, according to Efremov, creatures of different levels of evolutionary development could well exist simultaneously.

But despite such amazing conclusions, which were not recognized even by his closest colleagues, the studies of Ivan Antonovich Efremov in the field of geology and paleontology were of great importance for the development of these scientific disciplines. His scientific contribution was even awarded the Stalin Prize. But all these enormous services to the scientific world and the country later did not prevent the authorities from firmly taking on Efremov and his creative legacy. On November 4, 1972, a month after the writer's death, KGB specialists searched his apartment for many hours. But what they were looking for is still not clear. The entry in the protocol states that the reason for the search was the presence of "ideologically harmful literature."

And they took out this: old photographs of Efremov and his friends, letters, receipts, samples of minerals, a collapsible cane, "a metal club made of non-ferrous metal", a book about Africa, "various chemicals in bottles and jars." There are 41 subjects in total. A strange set, isn't it. After the search, the release of the 5-volume edition of the writer's works was suspended, and his scientific research did not appear anywhere for several years. Why did Ephraim so annoy the authorities that they tried to get rid of him even after his death? It's simple. Efremov, despite his activity, remained a dark horse for power. There were different versions.

According to one of them, during his expedition to Mongolia, Efremov was replaced by an English intelligence officer. According to another, it was done much earlier. Another unusual version is that Efremov, like many science fiction writers, is an agent of some extraterrestrial civilization.

In the 60-70s of the 20th century, this was common. For example, in the United States during this period, both in counterintelligence and in the army, there were units dealing directly with green men. One of the Strugatsky brothers, Arkady, said that he and his brother received many letters about alien spies. In his opinion, a strange search after the death of the writer, an incomprehensible set of confiscated items, just indicates that they were looking for something unusual, possibly an alien means of communication. Of course, no direct evidence was ever found, and could not be found, but the version of "Efremov the Alien" was in the air for a long time. Another reason for the tension and anxiety around the figure of Ivan Efremov was that he conveyed to people information that his contemporaries did not and could not know.
