The main thread of the film "The Truth About the Sea" is the state of our seas and oceans. Leading scientists such as Daniel Pauli argue that if we continue to catch and eat fish like we do now, then in 40 years the seas and oceans will be empty.
Commercial fishing is a modern economic monster: huge trawlers ravage the seabed, killing all living things at an alarming rate. A huge part of the catch is thrown back into the sea as unnecessary, crippled or dead.
Led by Dutch MP Marianne Thieme, two marine biologists Marianne van Mirlo and Barbara van Henna are studying scientific information about the state of our largest ecosystem, covering two-thirds of the planet.
Underwater photographer Dos Winkel showed them the beauty of marine life and the enormous threat it faces. Filming for this documentary took place in Newfoundland, Bonaire, the North Sea, Azores and parts of Holland. While the authorities are looking for a solution in the form of "rational fishing", leading scientists say that with every fish eaten today, we are bringing a future ecological catastrophe closer.
The film clearly shows that, unfortunately, there is no such thing as “sustainable fishing”.
