Strange not very large pillars installed near the arches can be observed by residents and guests of St. Petersburg. To be more precise, these were in almost all Russian cities at a certain time, but most of them have survived here. Today, few people are already aware of their real purpose.
In fact, they were installed with a completely practical purpose.

If you take a closer look at these posts, you can see how close they are to the walls of buildings. In addition, they were put there for a long time.

Curbstones can be both stone and metal, sometimes carved, having an interesting shape. In some places, their role is played by the trunks of small-sized old cannons, or balcony cornices, however, inverted.

They were installed for a reason. They served a specific purpose. In almost all cities of Russia, such restraints were installed in those days when there was still no motor transport and people moved in carts, on horses.
Very often, the carriage skidded around corners. As a result, sharp axles and wooden wheels damaged the corners of various structures, from staircases, building corners to monuments.

To minimize the risk of such damage, they installed such limiters, which were called wheel restraints or love ones. If you look closely, they were mostly conical or round in shape, or they were attached at an angle. This was done so that if the carriage suddenly hit the limiters, the wheel would slide smoothly to the ground.

These bollards ceased to fulfill their practical function with the appearance on city roads of small cars with a metal body. Drivers have become more accurate. It is clear that no one had the desire to regularly straighten after every careless parking and collision with a post.

Gradually, wheel bumpers began to disappear from city streets. Most of them to date have been preserved in St. Petersburg.
