Political scientist Lev Vershinin posted on his blog the following message with a link to his acquaintance, an engineer of this nuclear power plant: “Not Pripyat, but very bad. We do what we can, but we can do little. So what happened in Zaporozhye? Let's try together to reconstruct the picture of what happened.
On Monday evening, two popular Ukrainian news agencies, Context - Black Sea Region and In the City, posted reports of blackouts in Odessa - "due to an uncovered power shortage caused by the emergency shutdown of unit 3 of the Zaporizhzhya NPP." At the same time, Odessaoblenergo explained: the outages will be long-term "because of the difficulties encountered in troubleshooting" at the 3rd power unit (representatives of Odessaoblenergo several times stressed that the accident did not occur in the power grids, but at the NPP). They promised to resume the operation of the power unit by December 5. And at night from December 1 to December 2, in Zaporozhye, either two or several strong explosions were heard.
Today, pictures of the allegedly exploded power unit appeared on the network, but, as experts established, they were not taken yesterday and not in Zaporozhye. And on the morning of December 3, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that no comments on the accident in Zaporozhye would be given - "until the causes and consequences of the incident are fully established." Therefore, the accident at the nuclear power plant did take place.
Actually, there is nothing surprising in the fact that an accident occurred at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, no. In September of this year, Greenpeace spokesman Toby Munchmeier warned of two threats associated with the station. The first is the possible hit of an artillery shell at the nuclear power plant. The second is the problem with the change in the "power supply" of the plant (the announced by the management of the nuclear power plant, the transition from Russian TVELs to fuel of American production, which the station cannot "assimilate"). It is known that shells from Donbass did not fly into Zaporozhye, and there is no information about the terrorist attacks either. One thing remains - the station "did not digest" American fuel. Speaking about the possible consequences of the accident in Zaporozhye, Münchmeier warned: "The new Chernobyl could destroy not only the whole of Ukraine, but also a significant part of Europe." And yet - this is extremely important in the context of what happened: according to the representative of Greenpeace, even "an accident on the power grid can have catastrophic consequences, since it will lead to the failure of the cooling system of a nuclear reactor." And what happened from December 1 to December 2 is nothing more than the very accident on the power grids that Münchmeier warned about.
