On April 19, 2018, the final stage of the World Championship in Sports Programming ACM ICPC-2018 took place in Beijing. The title of winner was again won by representatives of Russia, but this time, Muscovites.

MSU victory

For the first time in its history, the team of Moscow State University (MSU) became the winner of the international sports programming Olympiad ACM ICPC 2018. The triumphants represented by Mikhail Ipatov, Vladislav Makeev and Grigory Reznikov were awarded the World Championship Cup, gold medals and a cash prize of $ 15,000.

“The results were very predictable. We are very happy for the well-deserved, and most importantly - long-awaited, victory of the Moscow State University team. They walked towards this success for a long time, finishing in second place five times,”said Roman Elizarov, chairman of the jury for the ICPC regional semifinals in Northern Eurasia, and a tutor at ITMO University.

The final stage of the competition took place on April 19, 2018 in Beijing, the capital of the PRC. 140 teams from 51 countries, including 11 from Russia, had to solve 11 problems in five hours.

According to the terms of the competition, each team has only one computer at their disposal without Internet access, therefore, in addition to knowing the algorithms, the ability to think logically and find non-standard approaches to solving problems, the participants had to demonstrate teamwork skills in a tight time frame. MSU students managed to successfully solve nine problems. They passed the last of them two minutes before the end of the competition, and this was enough for a confident victory.

Other winners

In addition to the title of champion, gold, silver and bronze medals are raffled off at the Olympiad. In previous years, they were awarded to the best 12 teams of the tournament, but this year 13 teams solved seven problems each, so the judges decided to award one additional award: it went to the Ural Federal University (UrFU). The list of prize-winners also included other Russian teams. MIPT students won the second place and gold medals for the correct solution of eight problems. Representatives of St. Petersburg ITMO - the winner of the tournament in 2017 and the current record holder in terms of the number of victories in it - took "bronze", having coped with seven problems.

MIPT team took second place

Representatives of Peking University (China), University of Tokyo (Japan), Seoul National University (South Korea), University of New South Wales (Australia), Tsinghua University (China), Shanghai University of Transport, University of Central Florida (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and Vilnius University (Lithuania).

The current record holder for the number of championship victories, the ITMO team, took 9th place and received a bronze medal

The 2018 tournament became 42 in a row, gathering a record number of participants - about 50 thousand students from almost 3, 1 thousand universities of 111 countries competed at all stages of the Olympiad.

History of victories

Russian programmers have been participating in the ACM ICPC since 1993 and have consistently won over the past seven years. Since 2000, Russians have stepped onto the top step of the podium 13 times

In 2017, the ITMO team won.

In 2016, our compatriots who represented St. Petersburg State University distinguished themselves again.

In 2015, ITMO students turned out to be head and shoulders above their competitors, for the first time among all teams in the world they solved all the tasks.

The 2014 tournament also ended with the triumph of the Russian school of programming: the SPbU team solved seven problems in five hours and won the championship cup.
