It comes from somewhere above. These plots are in our genes. When you start inventing or looking for an image, you begin to See with some sixth sense, these images themselves begin to wake up. This is a kind of ancestral memory. There is no source as such: the very moment of creativity is difficult to explain - you can read many books, but you can find the idea of a future picture in one line. Plots appear in different ways: a person said one word - and that's enough; you see a tree on the street, and its branch can become the impetus for creating a plot that has been pondering for so long. I am starting not from the general, but from the details, maybe that's why it turns out that way. Often I draw inspiration from scientific books on history, archaeologists, and historians in general dig out something, look for and write their works on the basis of historical facts, and an artist just needs to be a bird and look at everything (and at history in particular) from above. You can't see the details from above, you just see the images. It is they who become plots.

How do your loved ones react to your chosen subject of paintings?

Differently. My subject is non-commercial, so from time to time I have to draw different things to order: landscapes, already tired of flowers in vases … When I show my works on mythological themes, people react differently: someone admires, someone says that, they say, I like it, but we would like a landscape, since this theme does not fit into a modern apartment. But everything is relative.

So, in your opinion, antiquity and modernity can coexist side by side?

They can, of course, and that's how it should be. This is how it should be. Despite all the obstacles, the Russian people are still moving towards the revival of their memory. People have missed this topic, they feel an emptiness, a failure inside themselves, and finally they wake up with a desire to occupy this vacuum, and not just anything, but to return to their place long-lost things.

Who of your colleagues in the shop do you communicate with?

First of all, with Vsevolod Ivanov. We constantly communicate with him: we graduated from college together, we are still friends. Of course, there is communication with other colleagues, but this communication is in something else.

Do you have a favorite fairy tale or a favorite fairytale hero?

I didn’t even ask myself such a question. For me, a fairy tale is about ancient civilizations. It's just that the very name "fairy tale" for me is a story. A fairy tale always turns into reality. Our past is, in fact, one big fairy tale.

Does a modern person generally need myths and fairy tales?

It all depends on what is in the person's head. There are people who are born, and their souls are brought up so that they have to earn so much, accumulate so much, they do not need the past, the main thing is to have a dacha, an apartment, a car. Therefore, part of modern people really do not need it. But there are people like you and me who are interested in this - the history of our Family, our Clan. There is no single path in cognizing the past: someone is looking for Hyperborea, someone is painting pictures - everyone has different paths, but the goal is the same. For a normal person to know the fairy tales and myths of his people is as natural as to eat and sleep every day. Everyone should know where he lives, should know the history of the country.

Look at Japan: there they have it all fixed from century to century, they live differently, but here many have forgotten their roots. But the spirit of the Russian person is alive, each of us has a goal in life, and we are all trying to achieve it. Artistic talent is a gift, not everyone is given to be an artist.
