Check out this article before heading out to your favorite fast food restaurant, not necessarily McDonald's.
Here is a list of the most disgusting additives a person takes while pampering themselves with McDonald's food:
1. Ammonium sulfate - This substance is used in the mass production of bread, to fertilize the soil and kill beetles, and most often in the manufacture of strong household cleaning products. Incredibly, the US Food and Drug Administration has found low levels of ammonium sulfate in foods to be safe, but questions have been raised about the effect of the substance on people who eat bread on a daily basis. Ammonium sulfate has been linked to gastrointestinal irritability, which in turn causes diarrhea and nausea.
2. Silicone oil. McDonald's chicken nuggets contain a lot of dimethylpolysiloxane, a silicone oil often used in contact lenses and other medical supplies. Dimethylpolysiloxane is also an antifoam agent.
3. Tertiary butylhydroquinone. This additive can be found in eighteen McDonald's dishes. Tertiary butylhydroquinone is most commonly referred to as an “antioxidant,” however there is no mention anywhere that it is not a natural antioxidant, but a synthetic chemical with antioxidant properties. Tertiary butylhydroquinone stops the oxidation of fats and oils, thus extending the shelf life of processed foods. This substance is used in the production of various types of semi-finished products, and is also found in varnishes and pesticides. In addition, tertiary butylhydroquinone is used in cosmetics and perfumery to reduce evaporation rates and increase density. This chemical preservative is so dangerous that just five grams can kill a person. But don't panic, the FDA says the substance is generally safe.
4. Cysteine-L. Fast food restaurants use cysteine-L - an amino acid derived from human hair, duck feathers and pork bristles - to flavor meats, soften breads and baked goods. Also, this amino acid shortens the baking time in mass production of bread. Cysteine-L is mainly produced in China by dissolving hair or feathers in acid and then distributed around the world as a bread softener.
5. Prescription drugs. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University studied the feathers of farm-raised chickens and found interesting facts. Antidepressants and other prescription drugs are added to chicken feed for fast food restaurants. Basically, chickens are raised on a diet of prescription and over-the-counter drugs and illegal drugs.
6. Propylene glycol Is a chemical compound found in antifreeze, e-cigarettes, and fast food.
7. Carminic acid - This is a substance obtained from carmine bugs, which is used to color food, especially meat, red.
8. Dimethylpolysiloxane It is found in almost all fried fast food products, and it can also be found in contact lenses, smart clay, cosmetics, shampoos and hair conditioners, polishes and heat-resistant ceramic tiles to name but a few.
9. Silicon dioxide usually added to processed beef and chicken to prevent clumping. Silicon dioxide is listed as an ingredient in American fast food restaurants Wendy's and Taco Bell. Experts suggest that silica is not harmful to consumption, but interestingly, the ingredients that keep meat appetizing and prevent caking are also the main constituent of diatomaceous earth, which is widely used as a natural insect killer.
10. Cellulose Is processed wood pulp, which is included in almost all fast food items on the menu. Pulp is used in almost everything from cheese and salad dressing to muffins and strawberry syrup. Food manufacturers use cellulose to thicken and harden foods, replace fat, and increase fiber. Also, the use of cellulose leads to cost savings by minimizing components such as oil or flour. Powdered pulp is obtained by cooking virgin wood pulp in chemicals to separate the pulp, which is then refined. Modified versions require additional processing, such as acid exposure, to further degrade the fiber. Some of the fast food restaurants that contain cellulose are McDonald's, Arby's, Jack in the Box, KFC, Pizza Hut, Sonic, Taco Bell, and Wendy's.
