In the Soviet Union, a huge number of unique objects and samples of sophisticated equipment were created. All this was done with the sole purpose of serving for the good of the Motherland. Unfortunately, with the collapse of the country of the Soviets, the accumulated technical and architectural wealth remained useless to anyone, fell into oblivion, becoming the prey of marauders.
1. Radar "Duga"
A missile detection station was under construction.
One of several intercontinental ballistic missile early warning systems, which was created in the USSR. Located in Pripyat, Ukraine. At the time of construction, it was unique and unparalleled. The construction was completed in 1985. The complex is located near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Antenna dimensions 140x500 meters. It took more than 200 thousand tons of metal to create it.
2. Station for the study of the ionosphere
An analogue of the one that was in the United States.
Another large-scale Soviet facility that was created for scientific purposes. It is a domestic analogue of the American HAARP project, which was deployed in Alaska in 1980. At the moment, the station is completely abandoned and empty.
3. NPP in Shchelkino
The nuclear power plant could provide energy to the entire Crimea.
There were a large number of secret (and not very secret) objects in Crimea. There is nothing surprising in this. That during the time of the Russian Empire, that during the time of the USSR, the peninsula remained an important line of defense. The nuclear power plant in Shchelkino was supposed to provide the entire Crimea with electricity. The construction of the nuclear power plant began in 1974, but already in 1987 the project was frozen (then temporarily). This was due to the tragedy at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
4. Object number 221
In fact, this house is just a fake.
Another interesting place in Crimea. The photograph shows a building that is actually a dummy. Below it is a network of tunnels and several bunkers. It was one of the army's reserve command posts in case a nuclear war broke out. It was designed for 10 thousand people.
5. Chernobyl cemetery
Almost everything was taken away by marauders.
This picture, of course, is not the result of the unsuccessful Perestroika, but it looks no less sad. In fact, there were several such cemeteries of technology. Most of them do not exist today due to looters who began to disassemble equipment for dangerous trophies back in the days of the Soviet Union.
6. "Buran"
It costs no one unnecessary and rots.
One of the hangars at the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It contains the Soviet analogue of the American reusable space shuttle - Buran. The Soviet shuttle made its first flight in 1988. He also became the last. In 2002, the ship was damaged during the collapse. The budget cuts for the space program did not allow it to be restored.
7. "Lun"
Abandoned and forgotten.
During the Cold War, NATO placed great emphasis on the use of aircraft carriers. The Soviet Union responded primarily with submarines. In addition, the USSR had a project of a rocket ship-ekranoplan "Lun", which was conceived as a killer of aircraft carriers. In reality, the ship was suitable for dealing with any surface targets.
8. Rocket complex R-12 Dvina
Huge base with missile silos.
Another relic of the Cold War. The missile bunker in Postavy, created in 1964 for nuclear strikes. It was used for its intended purpose until 1994, after which it was removed from service and mothballed.
9. Object 825 GTS
There are no analogues in the whole world.
An underground submarine base in Balaklava. Once, one of the most secret objects of the Cold War. The construction of the complex was carried out for 8 years from 1953 to 1961. The complex was closed in 1993. After that, most of 825 was not guarded by anyone and was available for free visits. A distinctive feature of the GTS was the presence of the 1st protection class. This means that the base can withstand a 100 kt bomb hit.
10. Kola superdeep well
Still the deepest record holder.
The deepest hole in the Earth ever made by man. In 1997 she was awarded the honorary title with entry into the Guinness Book of Records. Drilled for scientific purposes. The ambitious drilling project in the USSR began in 1970. The maximum depth is 12,262 meters. Today the facility is abandoned.

Soviet Union at the World Exhibition in the USA
The history of the World Exhibitions began in the middle of the 19th century. At first, at the Expo, states simply measured their industrial achievements, but by 1939 the futurological aspect came to the fore. Now countries wanted not only to show what they had achieved, but also to present "teasers" of upcoming projects, as well as to predict the future

Thirty years ago, in April 1989, the Tbilisi events took place, which in many ways became the starting point in the process of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
