I would like to say a few words about the material … The fact that civilization returned to the city quite recently can be seen from the engravings - plants grow on the ruins, even young trees, and this takes at least several years. Consequently, the city has been "unattended" for a long time - no "Soviet power", a mess and complete devastation. This is quite consistent with the versions of the "abandoned city" - as evidenced by many photographs of the middle of the 19th century (full of the network) of empty central streets, at the busiest time of the day.

Regarding the author, the question also arises - why create in spring, when mud and snow do not allow to display the landscape in more detail? It was possible to wait for the summer, when it gets dry and in general, it is more comfortable to work.. Why such a rush? But the author, shocked by what he saw, starts work immediately, under the impression that he has recently arrived in the city … Moreover, the book was published after one and a half or two years (1921 drawings).. Apparently the author initially did not have a commercial idea - he was just trying to capture what he saw (and for this the artist needs inspiration)

By the way, at that time photography was already an ordinary, common thing, so the big question is why such engravings were made in 1921.. Wasn't it easier to shoot it on film? Perhaps filming was prohibited, or photographers with equipment were not allowed into the city (so they had to paint like in a court where photography is prohibited) or it was simply dangerous to go to St. Petersburg, maybe the railway message did not work … In general, some questions..

About the opening speech - in the yard 1923, a not a word about Soviet power, communism and Lenin in the text - and even herself revolution is called not something like - Great October Socialist (according to the late canon of the USSR), and Russian A revolution that also "adds coal" to the furnace of reflections.

And then - there are such lines about the capital "… peacefully resting on the banks of the Neva for two centuries.." - what happened before that? It is not said that the city was built two hundred years ago, it only "rested peacefully" - hence the existing version of the destruction of St. Petersburg (or as it was called then) two centuries ago, under the influence of some factors (war, natural disaster) and its subsequent restoration, not foundation..
