Nikolai Rubtsov is a Russian poet. Russia speaks with many voices, and one of its purest, soul-piercing voices is Rubtsov's poetry.

The tragic fate of Nikolai Rubtsov was the same as the fate of most of the great Russian poets. During his lifetime, his name was dear only to a narrow circle of connoisseurs of poetry; even among professional writers very few people realized the real value of his work. But since the mid-seventies (after his death), in an extremely short period of time, the poetry of Nikolai Rubtsov gained truly nationwide recognition. On September 21, 1985, a monumental monument to the poet was solemnly opened in the city of Totma.

Nikolai Mikhailovich Rubtsov was born on January 3, 1936 in the village of Yemets, Arkhangelsk Region. His childhood was orphaned, difficult, but he remembered it without bitterness.

His father fought, but, returning from the front, did not return to his family, but created another. Mother died when Kolya was six years old. He and his brothers and sisters (there were six of them together) were scattered around the orphanages. From 7 to 14 years old Nikolay spent in an orphanage in the village of Nikolskoye, Vologda Oblast. He graduated from the Nikolskaya seven-year school, studied at the Totem forestry technical school. At the age of 16, he began his wanderings around the country: Nikolai worked as a librarian, ship fireman, served in the Northern Fleet. After demobilization, Rubtsov lives in Leningrad, works at the Kirov plant, moving from one working specialty to another.

In 1962 Rubtsov entered the Literary Institute. Gorky, but two years later he was expelled for violation of discipline. He had to finish his studies in absentia.

From 1964 until his tragic death, Nikolai Rubtsov lived either in Vologda or in the village of Nikola, Totemsky District, sometimes working in different editions, doing day-to-day literary work. He had a family, a daughter was born, but the everlasting homelessness was on his heels. Like many Russian talents, Rubtsov was difficult in life, he drank a lot, was often penniless, he did not have his own corner. Everyday trouble created tension in his relationships with people and, although he had many friends and acquaintances, for none of them he was “the main one,” the person who takes the first place in his heart.

During these years, Rubtsov published collections of poems (during N. Rubtsov's lifetime, the collections "Lyrics", "Star of the Fields", "Soul Keeps", "Pine Noise" were published), he was published in magazines, his name gradually became known in Russia. And yet the true scale of his enormous talent became clear only after his death.

Shortly before his death, Nikolai Mikhailovich found his home, where he settled with the poetess Lyudmila Derbina. Their life together proceeded very unevenly, serious quarrels broke out between them, and during one such quarrel, on January 19, 1971, the poet died at the hands of Derbina. Shortly before his death, he writes a prophetic verse:

I will die in Epiphany frosts

I will die when the birch trees crackle

And in the spring the horror will be complete:

River waves will rush into the churchyard!

From my flooded grave

The coffin will emerge, forgotten and dull

Will crash with a bang

and in the dark

The terrible wreckage will float away

I myself do not know what it is …

I do not believe in the eternity of peace!

Rubtsov's poetry is noticeably uneven, but the best poems put him in the first row of Russian poetry. Depth with extreme simplicity - this is how his work could be characterized. The main features of Rubtsov's poetry are the tragic outlook, the inner loneliness of his lyrical hero, love for the dim northern land:

The poetry of Nikolai Rubtsov reflects the soul of the Russian people, its tragic rushes and searches. And also Rubtsov has a lot of soulful poetry dedicated to nature and rural life.
