This completely destroys the concept according to which it is argued that the first Slavs appeared in Europe only in the Middle Ages. Scientists examined the mitochondrial DNA of more than 2,500 representatives of the Slavic peoples: Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, as well as Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.

“We are discussing with archaeologists who argue that the appearance of the Slavs in Europe is a relatively recent period. According to their theory, the Slavs appeared in Europe only in the early Middle Ages. These conclusions are based on analyzes of the elements of the material culture of the Slavs. However, genetic analysis refutes this version. Some ancestors of the Slavs could have appeared on the territory of Europe four thousand years ago, says one of the Polish scientists Tomasz Grzybowski.

Thus, scientists from Copernicus University are inclined to the autochthonous theory of the appearance of the Slavs, according to which the first Slavs appeared in Europe no later than the Iron and Bronze Age.

"According to our research, we managed to find similar components of the DNA of the mitochondria of the Slavs, which were in Central Europe three thousand years ago," the scientists noted.

The discussions that continue in the scientific world on this issue concern two different planes. Supporters of the first argue that the Slavs are a fairly young group. Their conclusions are based on studies of the material culture of nationalities. Opponents retort: material culture is one thing, but genes are something completely different.

Among Polish scientists, there are many who adhere to the extreme autochthonous theory of the origin of the Slavs (Slavs originating from the territory of Poland), and there are also plenty of supporters of the theory, which claims that the Slavs migrated to Europe from other continents of the Golden Globe. To date, no group has yet been able to agree on a single version. However, research by scientists from Copernicus University can shed new light on an old debate and, possibly, put an end to the discussion of many years.
