In 2020, Chinese scientists plan to "hang" an alternative moon over the city of Chengdu.

An artificial satellite with a reflector will be able to direct the sun's rays to Earth even at night. The twilight glow from the satellite will be able to spread over an area of 10 to 80 km. It will be located closer to the Moon - at a distance of 500 km, not 380,000 km. Thanks to this, the light will be eight times brighter than the moon. Such lighting will save more than $ 170 million on electricity per year. In addition, the celestial mirror can easily cope with its tasks during natural disasters or energy outages.

According to the head of the Chinese company Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute Co (Casc) Wu Chunfen, work on the satellite has been going on for several years. Experiments with an artificial moon will be carried out over uninhabited territories so as not to interfere with people and technology for astronomical observations. During the pilot launch, they will also study the environmental impact of the unusual satellite.

If the project pays off, the number of artificial moons will increase to four by 2022.

In Russia in the late 1990s, a similar project with space mirrors called Znamya was implemented, but it was curtailed after an unsuccessful attempt to launch a satellite.
