As many researchers note, the crushing of Khazaria, whose leaders professed Judaism and supported it among the subordinate and surrounding peoples through the spread of enslavement, slavery, obedience and superiority of the Jews, beneficial to their worldview, meant breaking the shackles of the most severe spiritual oppression, which could destroy the foundations of a bright, original the spiritual life of the Slavs and other peoples of Eastern Europe.

Khazar Kaganate, Khazaria (650-969) - a medieval state created by a nomadic people - the Khazars. Separated from the Western Turkic Kaganate. He controlled the territory of the Ciscaucasia, the Lower and Middle Volga regions, modern north-western Kazakhstan, the Azov region, the eastern part of the Crimea, as well as the steppe and forest-steppe of Eastern Europe, up to the Dnieper. The center of the state was originally located in the coastal part of modern Dagestan, later moved to the lower reaches of the Volga. Part of the ruling elite accepted Judaism … For some time, part of the East Slavic tribal unions was in political dependence on the Khazars.

For the majority of Russian people, all knowledge about Khazaria is exhausted by the well-known Pushkin lines, according to which the "prophetic Oleg" is going to "take revenge on the unreasonable Khazars." In the history textbooks, only a few scant words are devoted to the defeat of the Kaganate by Prince Svyatoslav. The victory of Russia over the powerful southern neighbor is not mentioned in the officially approved list days of military glory … Of course, several of Svyatoslav's sayings became textbooks (“I’m coming to you!”, Etc.), but few people associate them with the defeat of the Khazars.

Meanwhile, such outstanding Russian historians as B. A. Rybakov, L. N. Gumilyov and M. I. Artamonov have repeatedly pointed out that this truly great victory ranks among the most significant events in Russian and world history. And this is not surprising, because the Khazars were not only the first serious enemy of our then very young state, but also in the person of the ruling Jewish elite in fact subjugated medieval Europe to their influence (primarily financially). The results of Svyatoslav's campaign against the parasitic kaganate were completely exceptional: the paths to the East were cleared, Crimea became Russian, a number of Khazarian satellites ceased to be a hostile barrier for Russia, and a number of European states were freed from Jewish oppression.

Let's ask ourselves a question: why are such epochal events of a thousand years ago presented today as intermediate facts of the history of the Fatherland that do not deserve the close attention of contemporaries?

But first, let's trace the outline of events that changed not only the then political map of Eurasia, but, without a doubt, the entire further course of world history.

What was the Khazar Kaganate, how did its rulers manage to achieve such an unprecedented position in the medieval world, and why did just one concentrated blow of the Russian troops put an end to the domination of such a powerful ethnic group?

The Khazar state arose in the middle of the 7th century on the ruins of the Turkic Kaganate. Geographically, the new state formation occupied a huge space: the entire Northern Black Sea region, most of the Crimea, the Azov region, the North Caucasus, the Lower Volga region and the Caspian Trans-Volga region. Ethnically, the population of the Kaganate was a conglomerate of Turkic peoples. True, the Khazars were originally Caucasians, but then, from about the end of the 6th century, they began to actively mix with the Türküts (the eastern geographers of this period divided the Khazars into two categories: dark-skinned, black-haired and “white, beautiful, perfect in appearance”).

The historical role in the transformation of Khazaria into a powerful, albeit completely parasitic the state belongs to the Jews. Jewish communities have long lived in this region, and from the second half of the 8th century, Jewish immigrants from Byzantium and Iran began to intensively migrate here. The Jews quickly took a leading position in Khazaria, settling exclusively in cities (while most of the aborigines were, of course, nomads). At the same time, the Jews, as consistent proselytes, did not allow any conversion of the Khazars to their faith, with rare exceptions. Gumilev notes: “Judaism is the cult of the people“chosen by Yahweh”, and therefore rare converts were considered“the leprosy of Israel”. Only the top of the Khazar nobility accepted Judaism …"

In the same period, a formal dual power developed: nominally, the head of state was the kagan, who represented the local population. In fact, the country was ruled by a bek of Jewish origin, whose power was passed from father to son. The position of the kagan can hardly be called enviable. He was not only a puppet of the Jews, but was also a kind of sacrificial animal that could be killed at the request of the crowd or the bek. The reason for this could be a natural disaster, military defeat, crop failure, and so on. The Turkic majority of Khazaria, imposed by severe taxes, was also in a disadvantaged position - in the Jewish terminology "goyim", "subhuman". The Khazars did not disdain the predatory raids on their neighbors, which gave the kaganate a large number of slaves sold in slave markets around the world.

As a military force, the Khazars used the services of a large mercenary Muslim army. This "guard" acted both in external wars and as a punitive force inside the country. The favorable geopolitical position of Khazaria, the presence of significant free capital, allowed the kaganate to exert a powerful influence on the entire world politics. Both the French Carolingians and the Spanish Umayyads were in financial bondage.

What can we say about the lands inhabited by the Slavs! "The Tale of Bygone Years" reports under the year 884 that the Khazars were paid tribute to the glade, northerners, Vyatichi, Rodimichi. In vassal dependence were the Tivertsy and Uchiha, with whom Prince Oleg fought. It must be emphasized that for all its might, the kaganate was an ear with feet of clay, after all, the Jewish elite did not perceive Khazaria as their homeland, did not care about the autochthonous majority in any way, all financial benefits were allowed solely to strengthen the position of the Jews in the entire Oikumen. Mercenary army it was effective when raiding neighbors and robbing tributaries, but when repelling external aggression it turned out to be practically useless …

The historical role of the defeat of the parasitic state belongs to the prince Svyatoslav Igorevich (964-972) - undoubtedly one of the greatest commanders of Ancient Russia. The epic Tale of Vengeance describes the prince as a valiant, courageous and wise knight. As a boy, he earned the respect of his squad. The governors respectfully say about him: “The prince has already started. Let’s sip, in a squad, according to the princess!”.

The military activity of Svyatoslav, with its unprecedented scale, was subordinated to two main directions: the Byzantine and the Khazar. Characterizing the content of the latter direction, Academician Rybakov writes: "The struggle for freedom and safety of trade routes from Russia to the East was becoming a common European affair …"

The campaign against the kaganate was thought out impeccably. The length of the hike is about 6000 km. It took about three years to complete. The prince did not dare to lead an offensive across the Don steppes, controlled by the Khazar cavalry. The Rus cut down and adjusted the boats, and in the spring of 965 they descended along the Oka and Volga to the Itil fortress, to the rear of the Khazar regular troops waiting for the enemy between the Don and the Dnieper. It is not proper for us to return to our homeland, fleeing. We must win and stay alive, or die in glory, having accomplished deeds worthy of valiant men!"

Resistance to the Rus was not led by bek Joseph, which the fled shamefully together with his fellow tribesmen, and an unnamed kagan. It was not difficult to achieve victory over the completely demoralized Turkic-Khazars. “And having been a battle, Svyatoslav defeated the khozar and took their city,” the chronicler laconically declares.
