The brownie is none other than one of the children of the god Veles, the original protector of the Slavs. And his children settled closer to people in order to help them in everything. Those who lived behind the stove were called brownies, those who went to the forest were called devil, the good spirits of rivers and lakes were called water spirits, and those who were ready to help a man in the field were called field workers.

According to one of the legends, this spirit originated from the number of rebellious celestials thrown to the ground. Having taken root near a person, he acquired good nature and a penchant for jokes, which, frankly speaking, differed from him by a fair amount of originality.

For example, for the sake of his own fun (or as a reproach to a guilty family member), he can tickle and pinch sleepy people, bang on walls, etc. They tried to get along with him, bringing food and gifts (and this creature is very eager for offerings), and also keeping his favorite bake corner clean. This was an important measure to prevent the "brownie" from being transferred. This could not be allowed, because among the people there was a firm conviction that the well-being of the house largely depends on the brownie.

The husband's sister began to be called the sister-in-law because it was she who had to circle the newlywed around the stove and sprinkle it with ashes, thus attaching to the house, presenting the housekeeper and obtaining consent from him to live.

In some Slavic tribes, it was believed that the brownie must be moved into the house as soon as it is ready. Others believed that the "bake" is born from the souls of those trees from which the hut is cut. After all, trees, like people, have souls, and after a log goes to construction, its soul remains right there. Still others generally believed that the way of life of a brownie was practically no different from that of a human: he could marry, have children, and therefore, procreate young shoots for new homes …

There were cases when the hut, for example, after a fire, became unsuitable for living in it. A new hut was being cut, but the brownie, at the suggestion of the household, remained restless in the ashes. And in order to prevent this from happening, they "took" him with them to the housewarming. For this, the brownie was planted either in a bast shoe, or on a wooden shovel, with the help of which they planted bread in the oven …

The brownie was supposed to predict the future. So, wanting to warn of trouble, he scratches and fiddles in the corners; pulling a woman by the hair, hinting that she needs to be wary of arguing with her husband. And if the brownie runs a furry paw on the cheek of the sleeping owner, you can expect wealth; warm - for good; cold and rough - for worse.

If grandfather-sibling on kudesy is left without gifts, then from a kind keeper of the hearth, he will turn into a rather fierce spirit. After supper, a pot of porridge is left behind the stove, lined with hot coals, so that the porridge does not cool down until midnight, when the brownie comes to supper.

The brownie does not like very much when people whistle in the house, and can leave the house forever.

Brownies also really do not like tobacco smoke, so you should never smoke in your house, since this smoke settles on household utensils, furniture and does not disappear.

If evil people are visiting you, the brownie will try to survive such people by any means: he can choke, put pressure on them.

The brownie also anticipates the approach of damage. He tries to warn the owner if a person comes into the house with evil intentions and black thoughts. In such cases, this person's hands can fall to the floor and break the dishes, or something can spill onto the tablecloth. It can also happen with the owner himself, as the brownie will try to warn him.

According to popular belief, it is impossible to leave piercing and cutting objects on the table (forks, knife, etc.) overnight, because this prevents the housekeeper from defending the house and resisting evil forces.

Previously, people believed that if you talk to a brownie, you can either become numb or become a stutterer forever. Therefore, it is recommended to just listen to what the brownie warns about. If it rattles the dishes, a fire may occur; if poured with water, then to illness; but if he cries and cries out, then be in grief; if it starts howling and slamming doors - to death.

Sometimes, in order to warn, the brownie can jump on the chest of a sleeping person and wake him up, at this moment he must be asked: "For better or for worse?" The brownie must answer very quietly in a human voice. Some threw him to the floor, the brownie groaned at the same time, but did not take offense, since this is forgivable for a sleepy person.

The brownie is unforgiving and loves gifts terribly. His taste is unassuming: milk in a saucer on the floor; a crust of bread left on the table after the master's meal; porridge or honey in a special dish, left in the kitchen so that the brownie goes out at midnight and dines. And a miracle happens: the dirty trick becomes humble and helpful, protects your good, helps in everyday life, and peace and tranquility reign in the house.

Everything would be fine, but the milk turns sour and poisons your life with its smell, and the other food left behind is happy to come to feast on the neighbor's cockroaches. Our distant ancestors racked their brains for a long time - how to appease the brownie? And they came up with a little house. A brownie is an item for decorating everyday life and at home, intended as a gift to a brownie.

It is better to make it yourself than to buy it in a souvenir shop or in the market: this is your brownie, and the best gift for him is one made with your own hands. Any natural materials are suitable for manufacturing: leather, bast, cereals, salted dough, dried berries, mushrooms, flowers that need to be attached to the base object - a miniature broom, bast shoes, home slippers.

The first thing to determine is an object on which you can attach small ornaments in all their diversity. This could be:

a broom turned upside down as a talisman against evil spirits;

decorative bast shoe or slippers as a designation of the place where the brownie lives;

a wreath or decorative braid as a symbol of the infinity and continuity of your kind;

bread spatula or painted spoon as the personification of prosperity in the house and hospitality of the owners.

If you don't find anything suitable, you can sew a bag made of rough fabric, for example, linen or burlap, stuff it with cotton wool or cereal and tie it with a beautiful ribbon.

Make sure in advance that the house can be firmly hung on the wall, attach a hook or loop on the back. You can decorate the resulting base with anything, call on imagination and taste to help, stock up on glue or threads, gather your noisy family around the table and act. Any dried plants look very beautiful in such compositions, especially dried ears of cereals. Any homemade pastry made from salted dough, small bagels or drying is suitable for decoration - your brownie will always be well-fed and kind to you.

Sunflower seeds and corn symbolize the energy of the sun and health, rowan fruits - female beauty, beans - physical strength, rice grains - peace in the house, coniferous cones - a symbol of achieving a goal, flax is a talisman against damage and the evil eye, garlic drives away evil spirits. You can use aromatic plants: mint, juniper, lavender.

It is better to hang a small house in the kitchen, closer to the stove, and if there is a fireplace in the house, then above it, since brownies love the warmth of an open fire and often live nearby. This mystical decoration will help you win the trust and love of the brownie, gain in his person a caring friend and brave defender. And if the brownie loves someone, he will serve faithfully and loyally, preserving the coziness and comfort of your home, the peace and prosperity of your family.

In general, the brownie is a kind spirit. Usually he is a zealous owner helping a close-knit family. Sometimes he is mischievous, plays pranks, if he doesn't like something. He scares those who do not care about the household and livestock. On this day, the brownie is fed with porridge, leaving it on the bend. They are fed and sentenced:

Master-father, take our porridge!

And eat the pies - take care of our house!

What kind of porridge do brownies like on the Day of their treat? Anyone! The one that the owners eat. The main thing is that the offering is made with love. But do not be discouraged if in the morning you find that the brownie never touched the porridge. These are other, so-called field life forms, so they do not eat porridge. For them, it is not the taste of the treat that is important, but the attention …
