For cartographers of Europe, the territory of Russia was often enigmatic and mysterious. It is all the more interesting to wander through the old maps created in the West.
The rating is based on two maps:
- Map of Russia from an engraving by Gessel Gerrits, Amsterdam, 1614
It is believed that, despite the errors, for the beginning of the 17th century, the map was (and for several decades remained) the most accurate map of the Russian state. The map of Hessel Gerrits differs from all the previous ones in the greater accuracy of the information, both in general outline and in details.
- Map of Russia, Muscovy and Tartary, from an engraving by Frans Hogenberg, Antwerp, 1570
Anthony Jenkinson, the compiler of this map, was not in any of these places, and possibly in Russia in general - Tartary. And he made his map according to the descriptions that have come down to him from various travelers of that time.
1. Tartary
Mysterious territory east of the Tobol River. On the second map, Russia and Muscovy are highlighted as administrative units within it.
2. Tobolsk - the capital of Siberia
This is the designation of the only city in Tartary.
3. Piebald Horde
A strange military formation near Tobolsk.
4. Volga RA-river
5. Emperor Ivan IV Vasilievich (Terrible)
In the second half of the 16th century, no one was called emperor in the world, except for the Russian tsar. There were kings, princes, kings, sultans, and the emperor was alone. So it was from the Byzantine Empire, "Vasileus" (Byzantine "emperor"), was considered the ruler of the world.
6. Golden Woman - Mother of God
The text says that this extraordinary deity was the cult of the people of that area and gave answers to the questions that were asked to her.
7. Cult of Ra
According to the comments of the map compiler, the people of this area (northern Siberia) worshiped the Sun, and used a red cloth as a symbol of the Sun.

Old maps of Africa are detailed, and in the 19th century this continent is a solid white spot
In the history of cartography, there is such a paradox: there are practically no "blank spots" on the early maps of the 16-17th centuries. As we get closer to our time, white spots appear
