Satellite data have long proven that the melting of glaciers significantly increases the level of the world's oceans. Recently it became known that from 1961 to 2016 the planet lost 9 trillion tons of ice, and the water level in it rises by one millimeter every year.

If this trend continues, some inhabited islands and even coastal cities with a population of one million may remain under water in the future. Back in 2015, the Business Insider team published a rather frightening video showing what the continents will look like after all the ice has melted.

First of all, oddly enough, small islands and cities built on them, such as Venice, will disappear. These changes on the map may not be noticed, but if you look at Asian countries, the picture becomes more frightening. For example, the Indian city of Calcutta and the Chinese city of Shanghai, with a total population of 19 million people, may remain at the depths of the ocean in the future. The United States of America will also become much smaller - at least, Florida can definitely be said goodbye.

The worst thing is that this is far from fantasy. Back in 2013, researchers from National Geographic reported that it would take less than 5,000 years to melt all the ice on the planet. The average temperature of the planet is constantly increasing, so this period may decrease over time.

At the same time, the increased risk of floods may not be the only problem awaiting humanity in the future. Rising temperatures are in themselves a threat to people, animals and plants, so it is important for scientists to find a way to avoid global warming. In March 2019, the first ever extinction of a mammal due to global warming was recorded.
