The story of a descendant of Old Believers who was born in Brazil, who fought in the Donbass and forgotten by the four states, but not forgotten by Bandera in the material of KP.ru.

Old Believer's New Faith

Raphael's ancestors, Old Believers from the Russian Empire, from Little Russia first came to Europe, then to Brazil.

In his eventful past - a military academy in his hometown, service in the French foreign legion, and then in the mounted police of São Paulo.

Several years ago he came to Russia with romantic dreams. Then 2014 came - and Rafael ended up in Donbass.

Like many volunteers of Novorossiya, he changed more than one unit. He was on duty at checkpoints, was an artilleryman, served in a battalion on multiple launch rocket launchers. I went on reconnaissance.

Knowledge of Russian, French and Portuguese made him a natural candidate for the role of commander of a small communist inter-squadron in the Donbass. Communist internationalists in Novorossiya easily found a common language with supporters of any views - with everyone who came to fight for a just cause.

Why did Rafael Márquez strive for his historical homeland? He was not a sightseer or an economic refugee. His hometown of 20 million São Paulo is the richest city in the Southern Hemisphere.

With his education, military and police experience, he could find a well-paid service at home. But he flew over the ocean to … enroll in the Russian Army. Lusvargi caught fire with this thought shortly after the operation to force Georgia to peace in August 2008. It seemed to the "Russian Brazilian" that there was a country in the world ready to intercede for small peoples.

Russia did not expect

However, here Russia disappointed him for the first, but not the last time. It turned out that "Russian in blood and spirit" and a Russian citizen are far from the same thing. And getting a passport is a huge problem.

And only people from the CIS can serve in the Russian army. Having failed here, Lusvargi decided to master the most peaceful profession - a doctor. Entered the Kursk Medical University. Studied for 3 years.

In 2014, training was interrupted - events began in the Donbass.

Then Rafael Márquez found out that another army appeared very close, where they speak and think in Russian, but where then they did not ask for a passport, did not require papers. He ended up in the "Ghost" unit. He was a translator and instructor and gave interviews to everyone who wanted to know how a Russian from Brazil is served in Novorossiya.

In many, especially Western countries, such activity is not encouraged by law - unlike Brazil, where there are no restrictions on this. Lusvargi knew this. And he never hid his face or his name. He only did not know that in the Kiev department of the SBU, operational development had begun against him.

Strangers everywhere

The history of his personal war was interrupted by a wound (already the second, severe). Received it in the battles for the Donetsk Airport. I had to return to Russia, and from there home, to Sao Paulo, for treatment. A shattered leg does not heal quickly.

Then he was able to avoid the trap, which fell into many of his comrades, volunteers of Novorossiya from far abroad. When their visa to Russia expired, many suddenly found out that the Russian authorities did not allow foreign volunteers to enter the embassies of their countries in Moscow.

And they offer them … to go to Kiev, and there to resolve all issues in the diplomatic missions in Ukraine. It is also impossible to extend a Russian visa or residence permit while in Donbass.

It turned out on the one hand - intractable Russian border guards, for whom they are only foreigners who do not have the right to cross the border, on the other - Ukrainian prisons, where 10-15 years of imprisonment shone.

This was Lusvarga's second disappointment. He managed to return to Brazil. But in his homeland, great changes have taken place during this time. On May 13, 2016, President Dilma Rousseff was ousted. Rousseff's predecessor, President Lula da Silva, also began to persecute.

“Our President was for Russia, for the BRICS, but there are very rich people who are on the side of America and against Russia,” Rafael himself explained the situation in his country before the coup.

When the Brazilian "parliamentary Maidan" won the victory, Lusvargi was summoned by the Brazilian special services and interrogated. The new, pro-American authorities of the country took note of it.

SBU ambush

At home they had to rebuild and find work. One offer seemed tempting to Rafael Marquez - he was offered to escort valuable cargo on merchant ships - all over the world, for a decent reward.

The London office in charge of the protection of sea transport did not raise any particular doubts. He could not even imagine that this was a dummy office organized by the Ukrainian SBU in London to lure former volunteers - to arrest them in the Square.

The demonstrative detention of Rafael Lusvarga

The first cargo was to be transported from Odessa to the Middle East. Of course, he was detained at the Ukrainian stage of the route. Raphael spent almost a year in prison, awaiting one trial and then another.

On January 25, 2017, the Kiev Pechersk Court sentenced Raphael to 13 years in prison. Later, through the efforts of lawyer Valentin Rybin, this verdict was challenged and overturned in August of the same year.

In December 2017, the measure of restraint was also changed - detention. They planned to exchange him for the military personnel of Ukraine.

The National Guard of Ukraine came to the Orthodox monastery

This exchange took place on December 18, 2017. But Rafael Lusvarga was not among those who were exchanged and released. Why? As Rafael's friends say, the negotiators from the DPR and LPR "did not show due persistence."

This exchange of prisoners "all for all" was another deception of Kiev. “They didn’t give away the citizens of Russia,” lawyer Valentin Rybin said at the time. "The Ukrainian side provided false information that they refused to exchange."

Moreover, Russian prisoners of war were excluded from the exchange. But even those already released for this exchange and who passed, according to Rybin's lawyer, "legal cleansing" again came under the pressure of the Ukrainian law enforcement system.

Betrayed all

Lusvargi seemed to have been forgotten for a while. Nobody knew who to do it now. The verdict of the Ukrainian court was canceled. The preventive measure has been lifted. The exchange did not take place. But he has not ceased to be a citizen of Brazil!

Raphael got a job as a novice in an Orthodox monastery

All that remained was to look for help at the Brazilian embassy in Kiev. And to receive new, temporary documents there - Lusvarga's old passport was never returned. And a person without documents is not like a person. Raphael got a job as a novice in an Orthodox monastery. And with his lawyer, Lusvargi began to knock on the doorsteps of his native embassy.

It quickly became clear that the Brazilian state was not eager to accept its citizen. And he is not going to correct new documents for him "as this may complicate relations with the host country."

Then, all of a sudden, Radio Liberty found Lusvargi in the monastery and made a lot of material about him. About the fact that the "DPR militant" freely walks around Kiev.

After that, nationalists from the C-14 organization (banned in Russia) broke into the temple. They were looking for the Brazilian, interrogating everyone they met, and humiliating the clergy.

The Nazis' "sermon" to the priests about what is moral now in Ukraine, they posted on the Web. As well as the beating of Rafael Lusvarga, caught by the militants. But the most surprising thing is that a citizen of Brazil was handed over to the Ukrainian neo-Nazis … personally by the consul of this country in Kiev.

He expelled his own citizen from the territory of the diplomatic mission of his country to punish the scumbags who do not hide their fascist views.

Caged sky

On May 7, 2018, a new court session took place. Rafael Marquez Lusvargi was remanded in custody. He faces a new trial and a new verdict - if he lives to see the trial.

It is unlikely that the negotiators in Minsk will remember this case. It is unlikely that Russia will deal with it. After all, our country does not raise the issue of even its own citizens abducted by Ukraine and who are on the territory of the square in prisons and pre-trial detention centers.

And if this is not done for its citizens, then what can the Brazilian descendant of the Old Believers, Rafael Lusvargi, expect from the Russian state?

This is the story of a man who has given up on four states - large and authoritative, small and unrecognized. For which he fought.

Each of them could provide him with support. Nobody did it.
