Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vasily Bogoyavlensky said that satellites managed to capture new craters on the Yamal Peninsula. The Siberian Times writes about it. The discovered craters are smaller in size than those found earlier, but there are many of them and their origin has yet to be explained.

At the moment, there are two versions of their origin. According to the first, they are formed by explosions of methane accumulated underground. According to the other, they appeared as a result of the melting of underground glaciers due to the previously established anomalous heat in the region.

Professor Bogoyavlensky explained that at the moment it is known about seven craters. Five of them are located directly on the Yamal Peninsula, one in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and another to the north of Krasnoyarsk.

“We have the exact coordinates of the location of only four of them, the other three were discovered by reindeer herders, but I am sure that there are more craters on Yamal, you just need to find them,” the professor explained. According to his assumptions, there are over 30 of them.

At the moment, scientists have only satellite images of the mysterious gaps. Conducting ground work directly on site is quite dangerous, since a gas eruption can occur at any time.

“Degassing is a process discovered on the territory of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug about 45 years ago. But we suspect that now he can give us clues in search of an answer to the reasons for the formation of craters and gas emissions. In any case, we must urgently study this phenomenon in order to prevent possible catastrophes,”the scientist explained.

He also said that no one knows what is happening now inside these craters. In the near future, it is planned to send an expedition to the mysterious craters and install at least four seismic stations in the area to measure the strength of earthquakes during the formation of craters.
