The first of two publications in which we summarize the most striking thoughts and indicative passages of Michel Auden's book Birth Reborn.
A few words about the author
Michel Auden (born 1930) is a famous French obstetrician, publicist, researcher of natural childbirth and aquatic childbirth. Auden's original specialization was a general surgeon. His competence included caesarean section, which, as a surgical operation, aroused in him an interest in the physiology of childbirth. This interest led Michel Auden to become the founder of the tradition of water birth, which is now the norm in modern Western obstetrics.
Auden's most famous book is Birth Reborn. It was first published in 1984, since then it has been translated into 13 languages and continues to be published to this day. In this book, Auden describes his medical practice as a surgeon and obstetrician at a hospital in Pitivier, France. Working together with six midwives and delivering nearly a thousand births a year, he has achieved excellent statistics with a low percentage of medical interventions.
When Auden first started working in Pitivier, he was a conventional physician who held traditional views of medicine and obstetric practice. But observations of patients during childbirth led him to believe that obstetrics is more than mechanical techniques, that childbirth is not a medical event, but an important emotional and sexual experience in a woman's life, and that maternity wards are more like equipped laboratories. the latest technology, create a hostile medical, official atmosphere, completely incompatible with the understanding of the process of childbirth as an event of personal life, as a sexual experience.
Of course, Auden was not satisfied with this answer. And he began to cling less to dogma and experiment. And the results of these experiments increasingly challenged the norms of traditional obstetrics. One day, Auden witnessed how the newborn took the breast and began to suckle immediately after giving birth. He wondered why this happens very rarely?
Auden on the traditional birthing position - on the back:
To create the special, intimate atmosphere that women need during childbirth, Auden's team of midwives have redesigned the delivery room. The design of this room was carried out by women who gave birth to children in the Pitivier hospital.
Michelle Auden on the role of women during childbirth:
Much in Auden's book is devoted to hormonal balance as an important factor on which the natural course of labor depends:
While medicines and interventions were used more and more widely throughout the maternity wards during childbirth, in Pitivier Hospital, on the contrary, everything was minimized:
In Pitivye, the woman was restored to her leading role in childbirth, because childbirth is an unconscious process. It cannot be helped or accelerated. The most important thing is not to interfere. The presence of people, their reactions - all this can negatively affect the course of childbirth.

How childbirth biologically rejuvenates a woman's brain
Scientists analyzed the structure of the brain of middle-aged women and found that it looks younger in those who have given birth than in those who have never had children. This is due to the fact that the protective mechanisms included in the body of the expectant mother operate throughout life. The research results are published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Childbirth, me and death
Fear for myself … Of course, this was the strongest feeling I had to cope with. It is instinctive, deep, animal … It paralyzes, slows down, saves … The roots of this fear again lie in the child's idea that childbirth is a mortal danger
My childbirth preparation solo
I want to say right away that my preparation for childbirth, and for pregnancy, too, is a process closely intertwined with everyday life. This is a changed way of life, which remained practically the same after childbirth and remains now, after seven months and, I hope, will remain forever
