Somehow tired of the public puzzling over the solution to the creation of hyperrealistic statues from marble. Meanwhile, the answers to the questions still continue to be collected, and here are a couple of them.
The first answer quite reliably explains how the veils were made:
In fact, nothing supernatural. The only thing that amazes is the skill of the sculptor. But this is what the Gift is given to a person in order to amaze the imagination, awaken feelings, disperse thoughts, and make the viewer radiate delight. So how !?
And the point is only in the special structure of the marble. The lump, which was to become a statue, had to have two layers - one more transparent, the other more dense. The most difficult thing is to find such a stone. But they meet, the mineralogists won't let them lie.
The master has a plot in his head, he knows what kind of lump he is looking for. Then painstaking work follows, observing the texture of a normal surface, separating along the border, a denser and more transparent part of the stone. The remnants of this transparent part seem to shine through. This effect creates the illusion of a veil.
But how did such creations come about?
The answer came unexpectedly from a commercial sent to me by my friend Sergey Izofatov.
Of course, no one completely walled up a person. But it is quite easy to imagine that the sculpture consists of separate fragments made using a similar technology. Everything falls into place if you realize that the secret of preparing mortar for formwork and marble composite was known to sculptors of the nineteenth century. Not everyone, of course. Only a select few. Then there is no point in looking for ancient "3D printers". Everything is much simpler. We have lost the secret of the philosopher's stone, well, or geopolymer concrete, who loves which name.
However, unresolved questions remain:
- What about people's faces?
- How can airy fabrics and laces be poured into the formwork without deforming them?
- How can you explain the presence of internal cavities, which do not matter for sculpture at all?
