The dependence of modern young people on the consumption of digital content threatens humanity with intellectual degradation and a kind of division into smart and stupid. Such conclusions of the scientific study were cited by the head of the laboratory of neurosciences and human behavior of Sberbank, president of the Higher School of Methodology Andrei Kurpatov, who spoke at a business breakfast of Sberbank as part of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
"Situations when you consume content constantly, you [in the brain] have an active central performing network. This means that the energy in those parts of the brain that are responsible for thinking are not supplied. In fact, the brain goes into hibernation. So you should not be surprised that that people who rarely crawl out of Twitter and Instagram rarely turn their heads on, "he says.
According to a study cited by Kurpatov, 40% of children under the age of 10 in the United States and Russia are almost constantly online. By adolescence, this figure rises to almost 70%. In this case, the brain takes an average of 23 minutes to turn on thinking. But in 2018, the average person only took 15 minutes to interrupt their real life, according to a study.
"As a result, what we have now is essentially an epidemic of digital autism. This is a condition in which young people cannot maintain psychological contact for a long time," Kurpatov said. According to him, this trend leads not only to the fact that the world is divided into rich and poor, "but also into stupid and smart."
According to another study, contact with a smartphone or other gadget for more than two to three hours increases depression and suicidal thoughts. At the same time, the smartphone affects the cognitive abilities of a person even when it is just next to a person, scientists have found. "You increase the amount of RAM and the mobility of intelligence when the smartphone is in another room and not next to the table. And vice versa, you become stupid when the smartphone is next to you," said Kurpatov, demonstrating the study's infographic.
